\u201cEach song carries a different place in that journey for me,\u201d she says. \u201cTo me, this record is probably the closest I\u2019ve come to making\u2026 almost a musical. It\u2019s really not a musical, but it feels like that to me.\u201d Ethereal, elusive synths interweave with melancholic live strings, jumping to dream-pop guitars and Euro rave climaxes blunted by distorted percussion\u2014it\u2019s Stel\u2019s sound at its most ambitious and assured yet. Its themes\u2014of turbulent relationships and meandering life paths, toxic patterns and the euphoria found in everyday moments\u2014are expressed with diaristic intimacy.<\/p>\n
The first song she made was the hypnotic \u201cLike A Kite,\u201d written around a year ago and almost abandoned after she got stuck on its second verse. \u201cThe feeling has to hit,\u201d she says. \u201cOften I\u2019ll try to write about something and make 10 songs, and then one will be the one where I feel like I\u2019ve finally captured it.\u201d It became one of the record\u2019s throbbing arteries, with its body-high bass and vulnerable lines about giving into curious new feelings.<\/p>\n
Her instincts mattered more than ever, as this is the first record Stel has made while knowing people are really waiting to hear it. \u201cMy first project, no one was listening,\u201d she says. Her second was already finished before Object Permanence began gaining traction. \u201cI didn\u2019t yet feel perceived. This project, I felt so perceived when I started making it.\u201d Her response was to become more stubborn about following her own taste. \u201cYou get so lost as soon as you start trying to guess what people want.\u201d<\/p>\n
Instead, she tests songs on the people who knew her before all of this: her brothers (Luke and Royce) and closest friends. \u201cThey\u2019re probably the only people whose opinions I really allow to touch the music,\u201d she says, noticing which tracks they ask to hear again or linger around to listen to while she works. Across the last few weeks, she\u2019s been testing new songs like the neon-synth-inflected, anthemic \u201cMolly In The Club\u201d on her crowds. \u201cPeople know the lyrics already,\u201d she says, smiling wickedly, \u201cbut I love them even more when they\u2019re pretending to know them. I know the trick! Mouthing \u2018watermelon.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Stel\u2019s perfectionism is reserved almost entirely for music. \u201cI never thought of myself that way until my girlfriend pointed it out\u2014I\u2019m trying to let go a little more,\u201d she admits. She still uses the same microphone she found eight years ago and has spent years refining the processing on her distinctive alto. \u201cI use tuning as an instrument,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s also given me a lot of freedom with my range and, for me, a kind of gender creativeness. I can sing really low and sing high and feel like two different people on a lot of the songs.\u201d<\/p>\n
The more meticulous she becomes in making the songs, the more she has had to accept imperfection in releasing them. \u201cI don\u2019t think I would ever have released music if I hadn\u2019t come to the conclusion that it\u2019s never going to feel done or perfect for me,\u201d she says. \u201cMusic is about feeling.
