The former prime minister Tony Abbott has called on One Nation to remove a cartoon labelling the Liberal frontbencher Andrew Hastie<\/a> a \u201ctraitor\u201d or accept it\u2019s playing a double standard.<\/p>\n

Senior Liberals along with the independent senator Jacqui Lambie and RSL Australia joined in condemnation of the cartoon<\/a> on Thursday with opposition leader Angus Taylor\u2019s call for it to be taken down.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it was right \u2013 and it was \u2013 for the ABC to apologise and withdraw its offensive \u2018satire\u2019 against Gina Rinehart<\/a>, it\u2019s also right for [One Nation] to do likewise with this offensive satire,\u201d Abbott, the federal president of the Liberal party, told Guardian Australia.<\/p>\n

The One Nation<\/a> animated cartoon posted to social media in late July depicts Hastie as a pitiful and paranoid opposition leader manipulated by Anthony Albanese into taking on One Nation.<\/p>\n

Hastie is also repeatedly described as a \u201ctraitor\u201d for giving evidence against Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith in his failed defamation case.<\/p>\n

RSL Australia said the word is particularly offensive for veterans as it \u201csends a corrosive message to the wider veteran community: that your service can be recast as betrayal the moment it\u2019s politically convenient\u201d.<\/p>\n

This week the veteran SAS commander Hastie chose to face One Nation\u2019s attack campaign head on, describing Hanson as \u201cweak and glass-jawed\u201d for refusing to call him a traitor directly or to take the video down.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s not fit to govern this country. And she\u2019s also cast a massive slur on veterans around the country who think that Australian soldiers should hold high standards of conduct on the battlefield,\u201d Hastie told ABC radio.<\/p>\n

The One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce said he didn\u2019t believe Hastie was a traitor, describing it as an \u201cabsurdity\u201d. However, he said he wouldn\u2019t be taking the cartoon offline.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s beyond my pay grade \u2026 I\u2019m not responsible for putting the cartoons up, and I\u2019m not responsible for taking them down,\u201d he told News24.<\/p>\n

In July, a four-minute documentary aired on the ABC program Race Around the World became the subject of scrutiny<\/a> by Hanson after it included crude, offensive and violent comments about Rinehart.<\/p>\n

The scene was later removed and the ABC issued an apology to Rinehart after she threatened the public broadcaster<\/a> with legal action.<\/p>\n

In an interview on News24 in August, Hanson said the ABC\u2019s description of the scene as \u201csatirical\u201d was a \u201ca load of rubbish and a cover-up\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was disgusting, absolutely disgusting, what they allowed \u2013 and [it\u2019s] still up there \u2013 to say about Gina Rinehart, or any Australian for that matter, regardless of whether [it\u2019s] Gina Rinehart, any Australian,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

At the time of Hanson\u2019s interview with News24, One Nation\u2019s cartoon featuring Hastie had been online for more than a fortnight.<\/p>\n

Hanson said she and her team knew the limits of political satirical and \u201cwhen to pull back\u201d.<\/p>\n
