\n Apple’s iPhone Duo

Apple has leaped into the foldable market following front-runners Samsung and Huawei, but the launch comes with a steep price tag in Korea, where the base model starts at 3.29 million won ($2,450), about 600,000 won pricier than the U.S. retail price.<\/p>\n
The U.S. price starts at $1,999 for the 256GB model, lower than many forecasts.\u00a0<\/p>\n
That is still 1.01 million won more expensive than Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Fold 8, which starts at 2.28 million won. The iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable, was unveiled at a product launch event in California on Wednesday. The event also marked the first major product launch presided over by new CEO John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook on Sept. 1.<\/p>\n
Apple’s device uses a passport-sized form factor similar to the Z Fold 8’s, with a 7.6-inch internal display and a 5.4-inch external display. Samsung Display supplied both panels.<\/p>\n
The device measures 11.3 millimeters (0.44 inches) thick when folded and 5.2 millimeters when unfolded, making it the thinnest iPhone yet when open. Still, it is thicker than the Z Fold 8, which measures 9.7 millimeters folded and 4.5 millimeters unfolded.<\/p>\n
It is also heavier than both the Z Fold 8 and the Z Fold 8 Ultra, weighing 254 grams (9 ounces) against 201 grams and 215 grams, respectively.<\/p>\n
Samsung Mobile US, the Korean company’s official U.S. account for mobile products, teased Apple over its late entry into the foldable market, posting jabs like “So far, so same” and “Let us know when you’re done reheating our leftovers” following the iPhone Duo’s debut.<\/p>\n
The Apple device also supports the Apple Pencil, while Samsung left out S Pen support on its latest foldables to keep them lighter.<\/p>\n
The device does not include Face ID, using Touch ID instead.<\/p>\n
On performance, it runs Apple’s newest chip set, the A20 Pro.<\/p>\n
Preorders open Oct. 16, with the device launching Oct. 23. Korea is among the 70 countries included in the iPhone Duo’s first wave of launches. It will come in two colors, Star White and Night Sky, and four storage options: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.<\/p>\n
Prices for the other storage tiers are 3.59 million won for 512GB, 4.19 million won for 1TB and 5.09 million won for 2TB.<\/p>\n
