Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay conceded his team was \u201chumbled\u201d by the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL\u2019s first regular season game in Australia<\/a> on Friday. <\/p>\n

McVay also responded to suggestions his club\u2019s abrupt travel plans were to blame for the 27-7 loss at the MCG in Melbourne, while superstar recruit Myles Garrett made a concerning health reveal. <\/p>\n

Aside from their early-second-quarter touchdown and third-quarter drive that was stopped on fourth down on the goal line, the Rams were inept offensively. <\/p>\n

And on the other side of the ball, they failed to quell 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, who threw for three TDs in the blowout result. <\/p>\n

Glaringly, LA\u2019s seven (7) points were the fewest scored with Matthew Stafford under centre. <\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes, sports can humble you. And today was one of those days. I make no excuses,\u201d McVay told reporters at the MCG. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd whether you want to say it\u2019s about travel, whatever \u2014 we just weren\u2019t good enough in that window. I didn\u2019t coach good enough. And we\u2019ll look at it, and we\u2019ll move forward. And that\u2019s where we\u2019re at right now. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut it was a great atmosphere. Give credit to the 49ers. They deserve it. And we\u2019re 0-1, and we\u2019ll move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

But despite arriving in Melbourne just 28 hours before kickoff, compared with San Francisco\u2019s seven days of acclimatisation, McVay didn\u2019t believe it to be a contributing factor in the loss. <\/p>\n

\u201cI know there\u2019s going to be a lot of narratives that appropriately put the blame on me. We\u2019ll move forward the right way,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\u201c… I don\u2019t believe (the travel plan) is why we didn\u2019t play well enough. I really don\u2019t. <\/p>\n

\u201cListen, I\u2019m more than comfortable. That\u2019s something I\u2019ll always make the decisions that I think are the best for the football team. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s easy in hindsight to say it was a miss. Those are responsibilities that I\u2019ll take. Then you\u2019ve got to be able to look at it. I\u2019ll always look at myself inside-out and figure out where I can improve.\u201d<\/p>\n

It comes after the Rams defensive players taunted the 49ers with a \u2018sleeping\u2019 celebration while leading 7-3 early in the game. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, superstar defensive end Myles Garrett, who failed to record a tackle in his Rams debut, was quick to defend his club\u2019s travel strategy. <\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Garrett quipped back when asked if he wished the team planned alternatively. <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t doubt the decision-making of my coach or my organisation. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think they did what was best for us, and we didn\u2019t execute on the field when we needed to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garrett also gave a damning assessment of his own performance, stating to media: \u201cThis was the worst version of myself that I\u2019ve put out there, and I\u2019ve got to be better.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was just the fourth time in his decorated career that the two-time Defensive Player of the Year has finished a game with zero tackles and zero QB hits. <\/p>\n

And Garrett revealed he\u2019s not at 100 per cent health, following the knee issue he sustained in training camp. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis was the worst version of myself that I\u2019ve put out there,\u201d he declared. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got to be better. I\u2019ve got to find out a way to recover and get back to the player I know I can be. <\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t the player I wanted to be; I didn\u2019t feel like I was the player I\u2019ve been before when I stepped onto that field. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got to do what I can to get back to that.\u201d<\/p>\n
