{"id":888134,"date":"2026-09-11T12:38:13","date_gmt":"2026-09-11T12:38:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/888134\/"},"modified":"2026-09-11T12:38:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T12:38:13","slug":"john-trengoves-the-smell-of-apples-sells-to-france","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/888134\/","title":{"rendered":"John Trengove\u2019s \u2018The Smell Of Apples\u2019 Sells To France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tEXCLUSIVE: ARP S\u00e9lection has acquired French rights to South African director and writer <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/john-trengove\/\" id=\"auto-tag_john-trengove\" data-tag=\"john-trengove\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Trengove<\/a>\u2019s Apartheid era drama <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/the-smell-of-apples\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-smell-of-apples\" data-tag=\"the-smell-of-apples\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Smell of Apples<\/a> ahead of its world premiere in <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/toronto\/\" id=\"auto-tag_toronto\" data-tag=\"toronto\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBased on Mark Behr\u2019s eponymous 1993 Booker Prize-nominated novel, the film follows a young boy growing up in a white utopia in Cape Town in the 1970s at the height of the racial segregation imposed by the Apartheid system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOn the surface his family leads a charmed life, but the complex family drama will expose the brutality beneath the idyllic fa\u00e7ade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cWe were deeply touched and very impressed by the strength, the emotional power and the sheer beauty of the film,\u201d remarked Mich\u00e9le Halberstadt, co-founding chief of the Paris-based distribution company, the upcoming slate of which also features <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/tiff\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tiff\" data-tag=\"tiff\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TIFF<\/a> titles, Le Faux Soir by\u00a0Micha\u00ebl R. Roskam and We Are All Strangers by Anthony Chen. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe deal was brokered by Cercamon which is handling international sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cFrance has a special place in international cinema, and bringing The Smell of Apples to French audiences is an important milestone for us,\u201d said Cercamon\u2019s Sebastien Chesneau.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re delighted to have ARP on board: Their enthusiasm for the film makes this a particularly exciting partnership, and we look forward to working together on its French release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTrengove\u2019s previous credits include The Wound (2017), which made it onto the Academy Awards nomination long list as South Africa\u2019s submission to the then Best Foreign Language Film category in 2018, and toxic masculinity drama Manodrome, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Adrien Brody.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe film is produced by Eric Abraham, Jack Sidey (Portobello Productions), Cait Pansegrouw (Cadence) and Frank Hoeve (BALDR Films).
