What does the future hold for Fernando Alonso \u2013 and, above all, where will he go next? The Spaniard has so far left his future from next year onwards \u2013 that is, for the 2027 season \u2013 up in the air. The most likely options are: he continues to drive in Formula 1 for Aston Martin; he takes on a different role within the team; or he drives for Aston Martin\u2019s World Endurance Championship team. Alonso confirmed on Thursday, ahead of his home Grand Prix in Madrid, that the WEC is also an option.<\/a><\/p>\n

Alonso made it clear that he needs more time before announcing a decision. And that decision depends on certain factors, including the regulations and, consequently, how the cars handle next season. If the regulations remain as they are, does that mean, for instance, that Formula 1 will lose Fernando Alonso as an active driver? <\/p>\n

Aston Martin wants to continue with him<\/p>\n

Alonso\u2019s Chief Trackside Officer at Aston Martin, Mike Krack, said on Friday in Madrid: \u201cIt\u2019s best to ask him yourself how serious he is about this. Ultimately, it\u2019s always been clear that the team wants to carry on. I think we\u2019ve made that clear all along, but we have to respect how Fernando feels about it. We must respect the time he wants to take. And as I\u2019ve already said, we\u2019re confident that we can find a good solution for everyone. And now it\u2019s a case of waiting and seeing. He has to make up his mind, and then we\u2019ll carry on.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two-time world champion\u2019s wish list is specific and extensive. Krack: \u201cHe has made it clear that it\u2019s not just one single thing he\u2019d like to see changed. I think the sport needs someone like him. I believe we\u2019d all be very pleased if Fernando were to carry on. And whatever can be done to accommodate that will, in my view, be done.
