TIFF<\/a> with his leading Obsession star Inde Navarrette, moderated by the fest\u2019s Midnight Madness programmer Peter Kuplowsky, the duo reminisced how their lives have changed over the last year following the pic\u2019s world premiere at TIFF where it was snatched up by Focus Features for $15M. The first change they noticed was an upgrade in their flight and hotel this year versus last when they arrived as a pure indie (Obsession was financed by Capstone for $750K). <\/p>\n\n\tHowever, had Obsession opened to $20M, Barker shared there was a plan for him and his reps to get tattoos. <\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cIt didn\u2019t (do that). It made $17M. So we\u2019re like \u2018Ok, I guess we\u2019re not getting the tattoos\u2026still really cool\u2019,\u201d he said, \u201cAnd then the next weekend it made $27M. It was like \u2018Holy shit!\u2019 That\u2019s unheard of for it to go up!.\u201d <\/p>\n
\n\tInteresting backstory, Barker had Obsession tested and the audience was quite unhappy with Bear (Michael Johnston) and his handling of off-the-rails g.f. Nikki (Navarrette), who he put a love-binding toxic spell on. <\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cPeople were saying that they were frustrated with Bear and they didn\u2019t understand why he doesn\u2019t just try to do more to fix it (the spell.\u201d <\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cThey were like \u2018Why isn\u2019t he going back to the crystal shop? Why isn\u2019t he doing more research and trying to fix it?\u2019 We got an overwhelming amount of people wanting us to do that,\u201d said the filmmaker. <\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cThen I was like \u2018Oh, wait, that\u2019s not what I want to do. I don\u2019t want to try and fix it. It\u2019s way more interesting that there\u2019s a passivity in his character. He\u2019s what I would call a passive antagonist,\u201d explained Barker. <\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cSo, it became clear to me that the way to fix the movie was not to make Bear try and fix it sooner, but to actually make it even more clear to the audience that he wants to make it work. That\u2019s the thing that he becomes active on trying to make this work,\u201d said Barker. <\/p>\n
\n\tBarker thus had reshoots, which he praised his financier for; those additional resources proved to the filmmaker that his backers had complete faith in his vision. <\/p>\n
\n\tIn regards to his how his career changed: Barker no longer gets \u2018Nos\u2019 when he heads into pitch meetings. Before Obsession, he would constantly come up with new ideas which were shot down. Now, the response he gets is, \u201c\u2018Curry, what is it you want to do?’\u201d shared the director.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s a little more challenging, he added, \u201cI can pitch anything.\u201d <\/p>\n
\n\tIn terms of Navarrette\u2019s streak, she recently appeared at D23 where it was announced she\u2019s playing Rogue in the Marvel Studio\u2019s revival of X-Men. <\/p>\n
