The MCG has immediately moved on from its historic NFL<\/a> debut, ripping up the entire playing field to prepare for an AFL<\/a> preliminary final next weekend and the grand final in a fortnight.<\/p>\n

The second-biggest international crowd in NFL history \u2014 100,021 \u2014 packed into the ground on Friday to witness the San Francisco 49ers claim victory over the LA Rams in Australia\u2019s first ever regular-season game.<\/p>\n

Hawthorn\u2019s upset qualifying-final win over Fremantle last weekend ensured the MCG would not need to host an AFL final on Saturday, but staff were still left with a monumental task with no time to waste.<\/p>\n

The teardown began in the hour after full-time in the NFL game.<\/p>\n

By Saturday there was no trace of the American game on the MCG playing arena \u2014 right down to the gridiron itself and painted end zones being cleared to make way for new turf.<\/p>\n

The AFL grass had been kept for the NFL with the 50m arc and centre square lines only just visible around the 20-yard lines.<\/p>\n

New turf will now be laid while work continues behind the scenes to get the MCG back to normal for the AFL finals.<\/p>\n

Lockers in the dressing rooms, which were decked out in 49ers and Rams colours, had also been overhauled for NFL players.<\/p>\n

It remains unclear if the NFL will return in 2027 as part of a four-year deal to bring at least two games to Melbourne.<\/p>\n

The AFL fixture is a serious complicating factor with the local league a key player in talks between the NFL and Victorian government.<\/p>\n

Next season\u2019s AFL fixture is already being pushed back to later in March to accommodate the 150th anniversary Test match between Australia and England at the \u2018G, making for another swift turnaround to remove drop-in pitches and prepare the outfield in the switch from cricket to football.<\/p>\n

The AFL grand final will then take place in October, meaning an NFL fixture once again scheduled for the American league\u2019s opening week could fall in the first week of the AFL finals \u2014 when the MCG is almost certain to host at least one AFL game but potentially up to three.<\/p>\n

The NFL also has a decision to make on just who will travel to Melbourne next time.<\/p>\n

The San Francisco 49ers have mixed emotions about playing in Australia again, despite feeling the love from fans and walking away with the win.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was nice that this was the first game of the year for us,\u201d Niners quarterback Brock Purdy said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was pretty special. They (the crowd) were into it the whole time, and they had their different chants and stuff with songs.\u201d <\/p>\n

But he said if they were to play again in Australia, it would have to be in week one of the season, like Friday\u2019s fixture. \u00a0 <\/p>\n

\u201cOnce we\u2019re in season and we\u2019re going through the grind of it, travel becomes a thing,\u201d Purdy said.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

\u201cOverall, the experience here was amazing, and we\u2019d love to be able to come back and play in front of the people here.\u201d <\/p>\n

It seems unlikely Australia\u2019s 49ers faithful will see their team again in the near future, considering the franchise doesn\u2019t have marketing rights in the country, unlike the Rams.<\/p>\n

The NFL\u2019s bold decision to host a game in Melbourne did draw criticism from Niners mentor Kyle Shanahan, who said there was \u201cnot much benefit\u201d to his team playing in Australia earlier in the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c(I have) nothing against Australia,\u201d the coach said on Friday. \u00a0 <\/p>\n

\u201cI just don\u2019t like to travel … I\u2019d like to come back when I\u2019m not working, though.\u201d<\/p>\n
