Right-hander Joe Jimenez<\/a> faced five batters during a live batting practice session on Friday before the Braves\u2019 game with the Phillies.\u00a0 It marked the first time Jimenez has faced live hitters in almost two years, since the reliever\u2019s appearance in Game 2 of the Braves\u2019 2024 Wild Card Series matchup with the Padres.<\/p>\n

About a month after that game, Jimenez underwent a surgery to address cartilage damage in his left knee and was given an 8-12 month recovery timeline.\u00a0 He ended up missing the entire 2025 season and then had another knee surgery last November.\u00a0 MLB.com\u2019s Mark Bowman<\/a> reports that Jimenez had a third procedure in March, and the cumulative effect of all these surgeries left the righty wondering if his career was over.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m grateful to be in here, just to be in this clubhouse still, have a uniform and say that I\u2019m still here.\u00a0 At one point, I thought that it was done,\u201d Jimenez told Bowman and other reporters yesterday.<\/p>\n

While Jimenez hasn\u2019t given up hope of pitching in a Major League game before 2026 is through, the chances are slim.\u00a0 There isn\u2019t much time left for Jimenez to begin a rehab assignment since the minor league season ends on September 20, and his long layoff makes him an unlikely candidate for inclusion on Atlanta\u2019s playoff roster.\u00a0 Braves manager Walt Weiss suggested an instructional league game or two could be possible for Jimenez, as \u201cI think it\u2019ll be great for him going into an offseason, getting to the point where he\u2019s pitched in the game, wherever that might be.\u00a0 It\u2019ll be great for his psyche.\u201d<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t long ago that Jimenez was one of the steadier relievers in baseball, particularly after the Braves acquired the righty in a trade from the Tigers during the 2022-23 offseason.\u00a0 Jimenez posted a 2.81 ERA, 30.1% strikeout rate, and 7.2% walk rate over 125 innings out of Atlanta\u2019s bullpen in 2023-24, and the Braves inked him to a three-year, $26MM extension just before Jimenez entered the free agent market in November 2023.<\/p>\n
