Richard \u2013 whose Huskies eliminated McCarthy\u2019s Terriers in the Hockey East Tournament back in March \u2013 has been on the better end of that rivalry, and he\u2019s quick to keep McCarthy in check. After all, there\u2019s lots of time for jabs and quips, especially now that the two are sharing the same roof.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, I definitely had to let him know,\u201d Richard said with a grin, adding, \u201ctwo years in a row.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Richard and McCarthy will get to turn the page on the next chapter of their hockey journey together, as the McCarthy family has been hosting Richard at their home in Buffalo for the last two months and continues to do so while the two prepare for training camp and their professional careers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI think that it adds a level of comfort, having a friend along your side going through the exact same thing,\u201d Richard said. \u201cI owe his family a huge \u2018thank you\u2019 letting me stay at their house for the last two months. I\u2019d say that it’s definitely a cool experience, especially to share that with him.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Richard, 22, spent the summer bouncing back and forth between Western New York and Toronto, where he trained with NHL alum and renowned strength and conditioning coach Gary Roberts. The strides he\u2019s made have impressed Moser \u2013 who saw Richard many times when UConn battled UVM.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI saw him out there, I said,\u00a0\u2018I feel like you grew this summer. I’m not sure if that’s possible at your age,\u2019\u201d Moser said. \u201cBut he looks big. He’s always had an excellent shot, and there were games against UConn \u2013 especially in their building \u2013 where the puck would find him and it’d be off his stick in a real hurry, so I’m excited to see him at the pro level.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
That level of compete between Richard and McCarthy certainly won\u2019t stop now, as the two will be vying for wide-open roles in Rochester this season \u2013 particularly Richard, who could be called upon to fill a rather vacant hole in the Amerks’ offense.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re both super competitive, so I think we push each other really well,\u201d McCarthy said. \u201cAnd, obviously, that little rivalry we had in college helps too, throwing shots back and forth.
