Sky F1 pundits clashed after Lewis Hamilton<\/a> hit the wall at the Spanish Grand Prix, before driving on against multiple Ferrari<\/a> instructions.<\/p>\n

Hamilton\u2019s Ferrari was damaged in a crash during FP3. It took an FIA race director order to stop him, as race engineer Carlo Santi pleaded with the seven-time world champion. Ted Kravitz called it a \u201csmart\u201d move from Hamilton<\/a>, while Anthony Davidson totally disagreed, urging all young drivers never to follow Hamilton\u2019s example.<\/p>\n

Hamilton found the wall at the final Madring corner, triggering a red flag to neutralise the FP3 session. He reversed his Ferrari out, and drove on, but with the front wing lodged underneath the SF-26 and a damaged front-right tyre.<\/p>\n

Hamilton was told four times in total by his race engineer Carlo Santi to stop the car. Only when he was told that it was a \u201cformal request\u201d from the FIA race director, did Hamilton park his Ferrari at the side of the track.<\/p>\n

\u201cLewis knows the importance to the rest of his weekend of having the qualifying preparation and practice. Lewis desperately wants to get it back,\u201d said Sky F1\u2019s pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz in reaction to Hamilton\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n

Sky F1 lead commentator David Croft countered: \u201cThat\u2019s all well and good Ted, that\u2019s all well and good, and I know he\u2019s done 393 previous Grands Prix, but you know the rules are: you don\u2019t drive the car in an unsafe condition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe team are telling you to stop. The driver\u2019s twice now on the radio gone against that, and he finally does stop the car. I get the feeling race control are going to take a very serious view of that, because the team told him to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kravitz responded: \u201cIt\u2019s disappointing. I wanted him to come back in.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know what you\u2019re saying about the rules, but that was smart thinking by Hamilton. We\u2019ll see what kind of penalty he gets.\u201d<\/p>\n

At that point, Anthony Davidson, the former F1 driver turned Sky F1 commentator, entered the discussion.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no, no. I completely disagree Ted,\u201d Davidson stressed.<\/p>\n

Davidson took a very dim view of Hamilton\u2019s actions, airing significant safety concerns.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny young driver that\u2019s watching this right now, don\u2019t do that. You just don\u2019t do that,\u201d Davidson continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what you could have tried to do, but the rule is there for a reason.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it went under the car completely and jacked your front wheels up, and there were marshals on the track \u2013 because it\u2019s a red flag, you\u2019ve got to think of all these scenarios \u2013 and you can\u2019t steer the car, and you run someone over because of it\u2026 It doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re a seven-time world champion or not. You can\u2019t turn the car when your front wheels are lifted off the ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, the rule is there for a reason. That\u2019s my opinion. I\u2019ve spoken to enough race directors and safety comes first. It has to when you\u2019re in a scenario like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The FIA stewards did not take any action against Hamilton over that FP3 incident.<\/p>\n
