They tried all their cards,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now let someone else try their own cards.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Singh, an Australian citizen who migrated from India more than 20 years ago, first became interested in One Nation because he supported its opposition to vaccine mandates during the COVID pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While he has previously voted Labor, he is now a member of the One Nation party and attends its events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I was not their supporter from day one. But then I said, &#8216;OK, let&#8217;s go watch [a One Nation event],'&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One Nation has surged in national polling and the party this year won its first <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-09\/farrer-sat-night-results\/106656856\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107139084\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">federal by-election<\/a>, as well as state seats in <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-04-02\/one-nation-wins-narungga-as-final-seat-of-sa-election-called\/106485580\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107139092\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South Australia<\/a> and <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-30\/one-nation-claims-win-secret-harbour-by-election\/107094074\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107139100\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Western Australia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Among those expressing support, polling suggests, are some culturally diverse Australians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Recent polling from research company Roy Morgan indicates pockets of support for One Nation among voters born in India, China and the Philippines, among other countries, while other pollsters have reported the same among people who speak a language other than English at home.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-20\/what-is-monoculturalism-and-what-does-it-look-like-in-practice\/106818222\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What is &#8216;monoculturalism&#8217; and what does it look like in practice?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Pauline Hanson has called for Australia to reject multiculturalism and be &#8220;monocultural&#8221;. So what does it involve and are there any nations overseas that show what it might look like in Australia?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Even within communities, there are diverse views.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Some of those voters open to One Nation have told the ABC they were concerned about migration levels and security, worried about inflation, and had been disappointed with the major parties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Manju, an Indian Australian voter who asked to be identified only by her first name, said she supported One Nation&#8217;s immigration policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The criteria should be restricted to skilled migrants according to our actual requirements, and restrictions must be placed on those who pose a national security threat,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-23\/one-nation-migration-rates-similar-labor\/107068282\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hanson steps in after Farley interview<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">One Nation MP David Farley told Insiders One Nation would pursue cuts to migration &#8220;not too different&#8221; to Labor. Pauline Hanson has stepped in to say the party&#8217;s policy would actually slash immigration by about half current rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has said the party would cut Australia&#8217;s net overseas migration, which was about 300,000 last year, to 130,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said it would do this by reducing the number of international students and temporary graduate visas, and through &#8220;a much more targeted skilled migration program&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One Nation also intends to restrict migration from countries on the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade&#8217;s <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smartraveller.gov.au\/destinations\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/externallink\/107139066\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;do not travel&#8221; list<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While he did not directly refer to One Nation&#8217;s policies, former prime minister John Howard, speaking at an ANU event last week, questioned whether there was strong evidence that terrorists had entered Australia through migration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He acknowledged the public mood was strongly focused on stopping terrorism from entering &#8220;under the cover of immigration&#8221;, but argued this could not be addressed simply by stopping migrants from particular countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said that type of approach to national security was &#8220;very hard&#8221; and could &#8220;be a lot more limiting than \u2026 people imagine&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However, like some other Australians the ABC spoke to, Manju said One Nation had not secured her support just yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Some are still grappling with the party&#8217;s positions on migrants and religion, as well as Senator Hanson&#8217;s recent call for Australia to embrace &#8220;monoculturalism&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman in a check blazer speaks in front of microphones, with a blue backdrop.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/f8d61edf19686f95d74d1b977f977df8.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Pauline Hanson called for Australia to reject multiculturalism and pursue &#8220;monoculturalism&#8221; at her NPC address. (ABC News: Adam Kennedy)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Before deciding whether to support One Nation, Manju wants to hear Senator Hanson respond to anti-Indian racism on social media, including <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-09-01\/families-refuse-to-give-up-on-loved-ones-missing-in-nepal\/107104082\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107104082\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">racist comments about Australians who were missing in the Nepal-Tibet flash floods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The extreme hatred directed at any brown-skinned person makes me sick,&#8221; Manju said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;How does she handle this group of people with this mindset?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Migrants have questions for Hanson<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Hindu Council of Australia vice president Surinder Jain said some migrants were also concerned about religious extremism following the Bondi attack and believed One Nation would &#8220;make Australia safe&#8221; by rejecting people known to support terrorism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But Mr Jain said some of Senator Hanson&#8217;s recent statements had put migrant voters off, including her call for Australia to be &#8220;monocultural&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are seeking a meeting with her to understand what is her stand on migrants, not on migration,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The freedom of speech, freedom of religion, that is such an important part of Australian values.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said leaders should not use divisive rhetoric, which he feared could fan anti-Indian hatred on social media, and ensure what they say aligned with &#8220;the best interests of Australia&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Edgar Lu, a Sydney-based social media influencer who posts on YouTube as &#8220;Sydney Daddy&#8221;, said he once volunteered for One Nation in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He also posted a Mandarin-subtitled video of Senator Hanson&#8217;s National Press Club speech to his 360,000 followers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man sits on a chair and smiles.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/92afe4b2c3dcd48112feb2beed29f41f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">YouTuber Edgar Lu said he is undecided about endorsing One Nation. (Facebook: One Nation)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australia&#8217;s Indian Sun magazine, which <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theindiansun.com.au\/2026\/09\/03\/one-nation-courts-multicultural-australia-on-its-own-terms\/\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/externallink\/107137668\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported on the post<\/a> with the headline &#8220;One Nation courts multicultural Australia on its own terms&#8221;, saw it as a move to build support among culturally diverse voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Jill Sheppard, an Australian National University (ANU) researcher on political participation among migrants, said the photo served two purposes for One Nation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;re trying to cultivate this idea of a good migrant who assimilates to Australian culture, who cooks and eats fish and chips, and who can be accepted into a mainstream &#8216;monocultural&#8217; Australia, given that&#8217;s apparently Pauline Hanson&#8217;s preference,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One Nation was also trying to broaden its appeal to win seats in parliament, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Running as a very strongly anti-migration single-issue party will only get One Nation so far,&#8221; Dr Sheppard said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;re going to have to diffuse their messaging a little bit and that means that we&#8217;re going to see Pauline Hanson turn up in more culturally and linguistic diverse areas talking to voters from all walks of life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-06\/socceroos-pauline-hanson-monoculture-comments\/106884702\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mabil says monoculture debate &#8216;bulls***&#8217; as Socceroos land home<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Socceroos star says anyone &#8220;trying to divide&#8221; the community is &#8220;probably not Australian themselves.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But if polls indicate some support among culturally diverse Australians, they also reflect a massive electoral barrier for the party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Kos Samaras, a pollster and director at the Redbridge Group, said its polling showed most were shunning One Nation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re choosing not to vote with them purely because of One Nation&#8217;s position on race or perceived position on race and migration,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Poll analyst Kevin Bonham also said he would not expect One Nation to win Labor-held outer-suburban seats with large culturally diverse populations at the next federal election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Some of the frontline seats that One Nation is looking at are rural seats where they can take a huge amount of support from the National Party and outer suburban seats that are not so historically Labor-friendly and perhaps less diverse,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Mehta, from FECCA, said the diversity of multicultural Australians meant there was no &#8220;catch-all migrant vote&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Like every other Australian, their support has to be earned by understanding what matters to them,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Culturally diverse Australians were dealing with many of the same pressures as the rest of the country, including cost of living, housing, healthcare and secure work, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There are additional barriers for some communities, including recognition of overseas qualifications, discrimination, being apart from their families, access to services and navigating complex systems,&#8221; Ms Mehta said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Where people feel they are working hard but not getting ahead, or that institutions don&#8217;t understand their frustrations and the obstacles they face.
