Momentum was expected to continue, with traffic expected to be up 140–160 percent compared to August levels during the week, peaking at 400 percent MoM over opening weekend (11 to 13 September). This would be 85 percent YoY growth compared to the 2025 opening weekend.

The figures highlight an emerging opportunity for retailers to connect sporting fandom with merchandise, entertainment, food and technology purchases, particularly as younger consumers increasingly engage with sport across multiple digital channels.

As fans prepared for watch parties in homes and workplaces, ADI predicted a 20 percent online spending lift on screens, including streaming devices, projectors, and TVs.

The same analysis expected a 15 percent lift in drinks and snacks.

For retailers, that creates a broader opportunity around the sporting occasion: the game becomes a trigger for consumers to upgrade their viewing setup, stock the pantry, organise a social gathering or buy merchandise connected to their preferred team.

ADI found that 36 percent of Australians say they already follow the NFL, with the sport over-indexing among younger generations with 58 percent of 16–35-year-olds following the sport.

A further 24 percent of Australians say they don’t follow the sport but planned to watch the Melbourne game, suggesting that the event is reaching beyond the established NFL fan base.

Among under-35s, 37 percent post on social media while watching a game and 40 percent message friends.

That creates additional opportunities for retailers to connect commerce with live sporting moments, social content, influencers and AI-powered product discovery.

Culture Kings Cash In

Illustrating the retail opportunity is Culture Kings’ Game On campaign, which shows how retailers can capitalise on a major sporting moment even without being an official event sponsor.

Despite no official ties to the game of NFL, following the launch of its NFL-focused activations on 4 September, including fan events and player appearances, Culture Kings recorded a 288 percent year-on-year increase in new customers at its Melbourne flagship, while units sold increased 370 percent and gross sales rose 318 percent. During game week from 7 to 10 September, the uplift accelerated, with Melbourne store units sold up 700 percent year-on-year and total sales up 635 percent year-on-year.

Across the campaign build-up and activation period from 1 to 10 September, NFL product units sold across all Culture Kings stores increased 387 percent compared with the preceding comparable period, while net NFL product sales grew 764 percent across stores and online NFL sales increased 128 percent.

Rather than investing in conventional game sponsorship, Culture Kings used its retail footprint, established audience, content channels and brand relationships to create a series of connected moments around the event.

Justin Hillberg, ANZ President at Culture Kings, comments, “Game On transformed our Melbourne flagship into an experience rather than simply a place to purchase product.”

“The response exceeded our expectations. The increases across new customers, conversion and total sales demonstrate what is possible when strong brand relationships, great product, cultural relevance and experiential retail work together.”

Major Events Become Retail Platforms

The Melbourne NFL game also demonstrates the broader economic value of major events to Victoria’s retail and visitor economy.

Minister for Tourism Natalie Suleyman said that international exposure could translate into future visitation.

“The NFL has put Melbourne in front of millions of potential visitors around the world, while fans from across Australia and overseas have experienced everything our city has to offer.”

“Major events drive tourism, create jobs, fill our hotels and restaurants and give people another reason to experience Victoria.”

For retailers, the longer-term opportunity is to turn major events from short-term sales spikes into repeat engagement, building communities around teams, creating event-linked ranges and promotions, and meeting consumers across physical stores, ecommerce, social platforms and AI-driven discovery.

The opportunity is massive. Last year, the NFL generated an estimated $23.5 billion USD in total revenue.

With the company signing a contract with the Victorian government to host an additional two games over the next three years, this opportunity should not be overlooked.

NFL Australia & New Zealand General Manager Charlotte Offord said the response had exceeded even their own expectations.

“The success of the 2026 NFL Melbourne Game exceeded our expectations and marked a defining moment for the NFL in Australia. The passion, energy and commitment shown by our fans, partners and entire community throughout the entire week demonstrated just how deeply the NFL resonates with Australian audiences.”

The NFL’s arrival in Melbourne delivered more than a record crowd, putting a spotlight on a growing retail…

[559
11590,64,63,8807,26186,593,5216,85,41
post-891373","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nfl","tag-adobe","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-branding","tag-insights","tag-nfl","tag-retail","tag-sports","tag-top-news
["GET
