\u201cForgotten Man\u201d Enric Mas won the red jersey on his seventh time trying. A 21-year-old won five stages in his grand tour debut. Seventy-five-kilo cobble-basher Wout van Aert nearly won the mountains jersey.<\/p>\n
Oh, and did we mention we discovered Tadej Poga\u010dar isn\u2019t invincible, after all?<\/p>\n
So much happened at this Vuelta we could riff hot takes until Halloween. But we won\u2019t subject you to that.<\/p>\n
Instead, here are five hot takes and five rapid-fire conclusions from the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a:<\/p>\n
Van Aert has given Belgium a luxury problem for road worlds

Team Belgium has got a fiendishly complex conundrum to conjure with in the 13 days before the world championship road race.<\/p>\n
How to combine a peak Wout van Aert<\/a> with an on-fire Remco Evenepoel?<\/p>\n Van Aert was irresistible<\/a> at La Vuelta. There\u2019s no question that he can win a rainbow jersey in Montr\u00e9al<\/a>.<\/p>\n The 31-year-old hasn\u2019t been this good since he ruled the 2022 Tour de France. And that hasn\u2019t gone unnoticed across Belgium.<\/p>\n There\u2019s already consternation over how the national team will play Evenepoel and Van Aert at Montr\u00e9al worlds.<\/p>\n The course suits them both, albeit in different racing scenarios. Evenepoel with a long attack, Van Aert for a small group sprint.<\/p>\n With Poga\u010dar out, both of Belgium\u2019s two big champions can see a golden chance to win a gold medal in Montr\u00e9al.<\/p>\n Van Aert won two stages, the green jersey, and the supercombativity prize at the Vuelta. Evenepoel roared back from finishing second at the Tour de France with victories at San Sebastian and GP Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n But of course, only one rider can win rainbows.<\/p>\n I wouldn\u2019t want to be Team Belgium\u2019s coach Serge Pauwels right now.<\/p>\n If he and his riders get their tactics right in Montr\u00e9al, one of Evenepoel and Van Aert will leave in glory, one will leave in disappointment.<\/p>\n And if Pauwels gets the tactics wrong \u2013 or if Van Aert or Evenepoel ignore them \u2013 the scars from Team Belgium\u2019s disaster at its home worlds in 2021 will rip right open.<\/p>\n Mas slaps back Enric Mas<\/a> showed the middle finger to all the doubters<\/a> with his Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a victory.<\/p>\n Because Mas\u2019 path to the red jersey was far from smooth and straightforward.<\/p>\n The Mallorcan climber was hailed the future king of Spanish cycling when he blasted to second overall on his Vuelta debut at the age of 23. After Alberto Contador\u2019s recent retirement, Mas was labelled as the one.<\/p>\n But when the expected grand tour victory didn\u2019t come<\/a>, home expectations soon deteriorated into exhaustion.<\/p>\n Spanish fans \u2013 and many overseas \u2013 didn\u2019t hold back from blasting Mas\u2019 defensive racing and introverted character. A recent struggle to diagnose thrombophlebitis in his leg hardly helped.<\/p>\n Mas hit an all-time low this spring when Movistar team boss Eusebio Unzu\u00e9 publicly derided him for being out of shape at the 2026 Giro, despite it being his first grand tour after 20 months on the sidelines.<\/p>\n Things changed fast for Mas.<\/p>\n He took the Vuelta by the scruff of the neck after Tadej Poga\u010dar crashed out. The \u201cforgotten man\u201d became a home hero by wearing the red jersey for 13 stages and becoming Spain\u2019s first Vuelta winner since Contador in 2014.<\/p>\n And, yes, Mas won \u201cin the absense of Poga\u010dar.\u201d<\/p>\n But he beat his remaining rivals with strength, not luck.<\/p>\n Two summit finish victories and near impenetrability in the mountains made Mas the GC champion Spain so long, and so angrily, wished for.<\/p>\n Brennan has given Visma a luxury problem for the Tour It\u2019s not only the Belgian national team that has a luxury problem to mull over after this Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a.<\/p>\n Visma-Lease a Bike might be pondering a similar conundrum.<\/p>\n How to fit a sprint superkid alongside a GC great at the Tour de France?<\/p>\n Matthew Brennan<\/a> made his case for selection for the 2027 Tour de France five times over at this Vuelta. Five stage wins<\/a> in six \u201cproper\u201d sprint opportunities \u2013 the 21-year-old rarely missed.<\/p>\n Brennan is one of the fastest new finishers in the bunch, and he knows it. The Brit\u2019s slew of stage wins even emboldened him to talk about winning the opening stage of his \u201chome\u201d grand d\u00e9part next year.<\/p>\n It will be hard for Visma to say \u201cno\u201d when Brennan asks for a ticket to the 2027 TDF. He\u2019s earned it, and he\u2019d be a strong insurance policy against a botched GC bid.<\/p>\n But sprinting against Tim Merlier and Jasper Philipsen at the Tour isn\u2019t the same as bullying Jordi Meeus and Bryan Coquard at La Vuelta. Brennan would need more than Wout van Aert to bring him through the intensity of a Tour de France sprint.<\/p>\n Vingegaard might have something to say about Visma taking a Brennan Train to the Tour. Whatever support Brennan gets is at the cost of his own climbing crew. He\u2019d be at a deficit before a possible rematch with Tadej Pogacar even started.<\/p>\n My armchair director\u2019s take?<\/p>\n Visma has to go with either Vingegaard or Brennan. Trying to do both at once could be a lose-lose for both potential leaders.<\/p>\n Pro cycling cannot continue to cook itself The Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a proved cycling cannot continue under its current model.<\/p>\n After unprecedented heat at the Tour de France, guess what? The Vuelta was even hotter.<\/p>\n Riders who spent all season heat training dropped out with heat stroke, left, right, and center. Jo\u00e3o Almeida warned \u201cwe are reaching the limit of the human body\u201d after he endured another day broiling at 40+ degrees C.<\/p>\n It\u2019s almost like the decision to host half the race in Andaluc\u00eda \u2013 the most southerly region of Spain and one of the sunniest regions in Europe \u2013 was a bad idea.<\/p>\n This Vuelta surely forces cycling to a moment of reckoning.<\/p>\n The bigs who pull the strings on the peloton cannot continue to ignore cycling\u2019s climate problem. Global warming won\u2019t be reversed by an ice vest and some relaxed restrictions on water distribution.<\/p>\n But what can be done to keep riders safe?<\/p>\n With regard to the Vuelta, race director Javier Guill\u00e9n is bullish that he\u2019ll only move his race away from peak summer if the UCI mandates it.<\/p>\n More broadly, organizers across the calendar will be similarly belligerent about moving races to the cool of early morning, as Tadej Poga\u010dar suggested. Nobody wants to tune in to watch a bike race at 10 a.m., after all. Broadcast revenue would be below the floorboards.<\/p>\n The only other solution? Make stages shorter.<\/p>\n But is it still a grand tour if it\u2019s won in 50 hours rather than 80 hours?<\/p>\n There\u2019s no clear answer to cycling\u2019s climate crisis.<\/p>\n But we need to find one pretty fast.<\/p>\n Racing is not \u2018better\u2019 without Poga\u010dar \u201cCouch Peloton\u201d seems to have decided the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a got better when Tadej Poga\u010dar crashed out.<\/p>\n I\u2019m not so sure.<\/p>\n It\u2019s true that even after Enric Mas seized the red jersey, the Vuelta felt wildly unpredictable all the way through to Granada.<\/p>\n There hasn\u2019t been a grand tour free from the suffocating presence of Poga\u010dar, Jonas Vingegaard, and their respective superteams since the 2025 Giro, and it showed.<\/p>\n Without one dominant team and one dominant racer, the red jersey never felt truly secure until Mas hit \u201cstop\u201d on his bike computer after stage 21. Likewise, stage 20 was possibly the best, most riotous day of grand tour GC racing all year.<\/p>\n If Poga\u010dar or Vingegaard were there, the race for first would have been a done deal by the end of week two.<\/p>\n But let\u2019s not rose-tint it. Poga\u010dar\u2019s absence didn\u2019t mean the three-week spectacle was better.<\/p>\n For example, the summit finish to Penas Blancas on stage 19 turned into a nothing burger without Poga\u010dar to blow up the race.<\/p>\n There was none of the chatter of record speeds, climbing records, or superhuman attacks when Pogi left in the ambulance.<\/p>\n Racing wasn\u2019t \u201cbetter\u201d without Poga\u010dar, it was \u201cdifferent.\u201d<\/p>\n It was a welcome break after Vingegaard dominated the 2026 Giro and Poga\u010dar obliterated the Tour.<\/p>\n For example, who tipped Mas to secure a career-defining grand tour victory before the race started? And who was betting on fan-favorite Mikel Landa winning the hardest stage of the race?<\/p>\n Neither would have been possible were Poga\u010dar ruling over proceedings.<\/p>\n But watching greatness is a privilege. We should bask in Poga\u010dar\u2019s brilliance while we can. Cycling might not see another superstar like him for decades.<\/p>\n And 5 quick-fire conclusions from the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a Never count out Sepp Kuss on a supersize mountain stage. Kuss\u2019 crazy raid on stage 20 \u2013 the final mountain stage of his third grand tour or the year \u2013 reaffirmed that the Eagle of Colorado never loses his wings.<\/p>\n The Primoz Rogli\u010d era is over. Yes, he secured second overall after he started the race knocked back by a crash, but it\u2019s hard to see Rogla winning big again. A possible move to Intermarch\u00e9 Lotto won\u2019t help that.<\/p>\n Jakob Omrzel, Ramses Debruyne, Alessandro Romele, Juan Felipe Rodriguez: take a bow. This Vuelta birthed four new stars of the future.<\/p>\n Richard Carapaz is, as we also concluded after the Tour de France<\/a>, an animal.<\/p>\n
