Yoichiro Fukao will step up to the role of Large Project Leader on October 1, replacing Tetsushi Kakuda after serving as deputy leader of the F1 project and heading Honda\u2019s software division.<\/p>\n
Honda characterised the reshuffle as a planned handover intended to hasten development while transferring technical knowledge to its next generation of engineers.<\/p>\n
\u201cHonda Racing Corporation will implement a change in the leadership of its F1 Power Unit (PU) development program, effective October 1st, 2026, with the aim of further accelerating PU development and ensuring a smooth transition to the next generation of engineers,\u201d Honda said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The manufacturer is also looking beyond the opening season of F1\u2019s new regulations as it prepares for further rule changes from next year.<\/p>\n
\u201cFollowing the introduction of the new regulations in 2026, and with further regulatory changes expected from 2027 onwards, Honda aims to establish a robust development framework and deliver a highly competitive PU by transitioning to the new structure at an early stage,\u201d Honda added.<\/p>\n
Fukao has been with Honda since 2002, initially working on engine and gearbox control systems within its F1 operation.<\/p>\n
His career has also included roles developing road-car hybrid technology and MotoGP control systems before he returned to the company\u2019s F1 project in 2014.<\/p>\n
He became deputy leader of the project in 2017 before continuing in the role following the creation of Honda Racing Corporation.<\/p>\n
The leadership switch comes with Aston Martin and Honda still searching for a breakthrough during the opening year of their works partnership.<\/p>\n
The team has managed only three points this season, enough to remain one place ahead of newcomer Cadillac near the bottom of the constructors\u2019 standings.<\/p>\n
Changes introduced across the middle of the campaign have delivered some progress to both the car and power unit, but Aston Martin has remained well away from the leading teams and engine driveability continues to be a concern.<\/p>\n
Its difficulties were again evident at the Spanish Grand Prix, where Lance Stroll retired early and Fernando Alonso finished 17th, two laps behind after also being affected by damage.<\/p>\n
Honda\u2019s competitive position has also kept the question of additional development assistance in focus.<\/p>\n
The manufacturer received extra scope to work on its power unit in May, while discussions have continued over whether Formula 1\u2019s ADUO catch-up provisions should be adjusted further.<\/p>\n
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem held talks during the Madrid weekend with Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll and Alonso as possible measures to assist Honda continued to be considered.<\/p>\n
