\n\tMatthew Rhys<\/a> did something no actor had done in 78 years of the Emmy Awards.<\/p>\n

\n\tRhys won two lead acting Emmys<\/a> on the same night at Monday\u2019s ceremony. Earlier in the night he shockingly took home the lead actor (limited) for his work in Netflix\u2019s \u201cThe Beast in Me.\u201d<\/a> Later on, he nabbed the lead comedy actor prize for Apple TV\u2019s \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tHe\u2019s now the first person ever to claim both lead actor prizes in a single ceremony, and adding to his 2018 drama win for \u201cThe Americans,\u201d the pair of statuettes also makes him the first male performer to win in all three lead acting categories.<\/p>\n

\n\tTwo performers had won two acting Emmys on one night before, but neither did it in the lead categories: James Earl Jones swept lead drama actor for \u201cGabriel\u2019s Fire\u201d and supporting actor (limited) for \u201cHeat Wave\u201d in 1991, and Stockard Channing took two supporting actress trophies in 2002, for \u201cThe West Wing\u201d and \u201cThe Matthew Shepard Story.\u201d Rhys is the first to do it at the top of two ballots at once.<\/p>\n

\n\tRhys, already a previous Emmy winner for lead drama actor in 2018 for \u201cThe Americans\u201d and now, \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d and \u201cThe Beast in Me<\/a>\u201d hands him the complete set of lead acting Emmys across drama, comedy and limited, a trifecta no actor had ever assembled. Three men have been close: Robert Young and Carroll O\u2019Connor each won the drama and comedy leads, and Andre Braugher took drama and limited. The only performer of any gender to complete the set before Rhys is Barbara Stanwyck, who won all three lead actress categories between 1961 and 1983 \u2014 though the earliest of hers predates the split between the comedy and drama races. (Among the actresses still stuck one short is Claire Danes, Rhys\u2019 \u201cBeast in Me\u201d co-star.)<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the limited race he pulled off the bigger surprise, edging the presumptive favorite Oscar Isaac (\u201cBeef\u201d) along with Riz Ahmed (\u201cBait\u201d), Jason Bateman (\u201cBlack Rabbit\u201d) and Charlie Hunnam (\u201cMonster: The Ed Gein Story\u201d). On the comedy side, Rhys topped Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (\u201cWonder Man\u201d), Steve Carell (\u201cRooster\u201d), Jason Segel (\u201cShrinking\u201d) and Martin Short (\u201cOnly Murders in the Building\u201d). <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Welsh actor also has two additional nominations as an executive producer on both of his series. <\/p>\n
