Somehow, though the Television<\/a> Academy relegated even more awards to the pre-telecast ceremonies, this year\u2019s Emmys still felt stuffed. Maybe it was the spaghetti-at-the-wall approach of SVU star Mariska Hargitay, who tried multiple musical numbers (eek), a Taylor Swift cameo (better) and seemingly two seasons\u2019 worth of dresses (impressive, frankly) to make her first-time hosting gig stick.<\/p>\n It was smooth enough, aided by a packed awards schedule that mostly went according to prognosticators \u2013 big wins for The Pitt<\/a> in drama, a single televised award for DTF St Louis in limited series, Widow\u2019s Bay nearly sweeping the comedy awards \u2013 though still with some surprises. I don\u2019t think many, not least Matthew Rhys, saw the Widow\u2019s Bay star also winning lead actor in a limited series for The Beast in Me, thus becoming the first actor to win two leading awards in one night.<\/p>\n There were some highlights \u2013 John Mulaney\u2019s brilliant send-up of a man\u2019s man, Sally Field and Reba McEntire\u2019s tribute to Dolly Parton, every time the Widow\u2019s Bay creator, Katie Dippold, spoke \u2013 and some low-lights (whatever it was Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were doing, for far too long), as well as a notable lack of pointed political speeches, with many, such as the Pitt\u2019s R Scott Gemmill, talking vaguely instead about our crumbling shared reality. But the show went on \u2026 and on.<\/p>\n And so goes another season of TV. Thanks for joining us! Here are some highlights:<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Updated at\u00a023.34 EDT<\/p>\n Here\u2019s a full list of winners from tonight, if you still need to get up to speed:<\/p>\n Share<\/a> This year\u2019s ceremony was noticeably less political than last year, when Hannah Einbinder used her acceptance speech to call for a free Palestine and stars wore solidarity pins and keffiyeh on the red carpet.<\/p>\n Accepting best writing in a drama for Pluribus, the show\u2019s creator, Vince Gilligan, obliquely reminded us of the outside world when he described the show as set in a world \u201cin which everybody gets along \u2013 that\u2019s so sci-fi. Please, John Mulaney, stop saying no to hosting award shows!<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Updated at\u00a023.15 EDT<\/p>\n WINNER: Widow\u2019s Bay \u2013 outstanding comedy series No surprise here \u2013 Widow\u2019s Bay, the breakout hit of the summer, completes its comedy sweep (sorry to the final season of Hacks) by winning the night\u2019s final award, best comedy, for its truly outstanding freshman season.<\/p>\n Creator Katie Dippold, of Babadook Halloween tweet<\/a> fame, speaks on behalf of the show and starts with her mom, \u201cfor always making Halloween fun\u201d, as well as Apple TV, \u201cfor letting us take this crazy creative swing. They truly just let us do this crazy weird show.\u201d And last but not least, she thanks \u201cthe evil entity on the island that trusted us with its story\u201d. And with that perfect note, that\u2019s a wrap on awards!<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Updated at\u00a023.14 EDT<\/p>\n We are still waiting for the night\u2019s final award, best comedy series, which is being held up by Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey doing a very extended bit about their respective dad and mom knowing each other, in support of their new show Brothers. Get it? I\u2019d like this to stop.<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Updated at\u00a023.13 EDT<\/p>\n WINNER: The Pitt \u2013 outstanding drama series The Pitt came into this evening with the momentum, the most nominations and a sweep last year, and The Pitt<\/a> emerges victorious again.<\/p>\n Creator R Scott Gemmill speaks on behalf of the PTMC team, who appear just as thrilled as last year, with a lengthy speech celebrating both the storytellers of Hollywood and the unsung staff of emergency rooms across the nation.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are so blessed to have the most talented and passionate cast and crew, and I know that it\u2019s not just our show \u2026 the best part of this job are the people we get to work with every day,\u201d he says, before turning attention to \u201cthe real life heroes in the emergency departments who are there for us day in and day out\u201d:<\/p>\n double quotation markWhen I look around this room, I see something more important than the award and the ratings. Among them: Dolly Parton, Catherine O\u2019Hara, Hayden Panettiere, James Van Der Beek and Rob Reiner, who won a posthumous Emmy last weekend for his guest role on The Bear<\/a>.<\/p>\n His win, a teary Jamie Lee Curtis tells us, set a record for the longest gap between Emmy awards \u2013 48 years, breaking a feat set by none other than his father, Carl Reiner.<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Updated at\u00a022.40 EDT<\/p>\n Back to the in memoriam with another tear-jerking tribute, this time by Macauley Culkin, Annie Murphy and Dan Levy to their collective on-screen mom, Catherine O\u2019Hara.<\/p>\n The Canadian comedy icon \u201cwasn\u2019t just a wife and mother to Beau and Matthew and Luke, she was my mom, our mom, all of our moms,\u201d said Culkin, appearing near tears. Murphy recalled how her laugh was \u201ca perpetual yes\u201d before detailing numerous humorous (and very Canadian) encounters with strangers also mourning her death, showing \u201chow profoundly Catherine has impacted the world, and it\u2019s because she brought us joy\u201d.<\/p>\n The biggest lesson O\u2019Hara taught Levy was to \u201calways say yes \u2026 Say yes to her stories and her dinner invites and her wisdom and her stories.\u201d Cue tears.<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Updated at\u00a022.35 EDT<\/p>\n WINNER: DTF St Louis \u2013 limited or anthology series I would\u2019ve guessed Beef but HBO\u2019s DTF St Louis, barely heard from this evening, has already won seven Emmys<\/a> this season \u2013 though most of them, including acting awards for stars David Harbour and Linda Cardinelli, were handed out before the telecast.<\/p>\n The dark comedy\u2019s creator, Steven Conrad, makes quick work of the acceptance speech, thanking all 175 people who worked on the show \u2013 \u201cWe are all grateful and we each send our appreciation, thank you\u201d \u2013 just as the whole cast makes it on to the stage.<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Updated at\u00a022.25 EDT<\/p>\n Oh man, cue the tissues \u2013 we\u2019re headed into the in memoriam segment of the evening, first with Dolly Parton. \u201cIf there are truly angels on earth, then we just lost one,\u201d says her Steel Magnolias co-star Sally Field, who \u201cadored her from day one \u2013 how could you not?\u201d<\/p>\n Parton, she adds, was \u201cblisteringly funny\u201d, with a bawdy sense of humor that would send \u201cany rude guy-looking for a place to hide\u201d. But she also was a \u201creal giant\u201d \u2013 not just as an entertainer, but \u201cas a human\u201d. And if that didn\u2019t have you crying, Reba McEntire enters with a stirring, appropriately smoky rendition of Parton\u2019s nostalgic tribute to her home town, Appalachian Memories.<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Updated at\u00a022.24 EDT<\/p>\n WINNER: Vince Gilligan (Pluribus) \u2013 writing for a drama series The celebrated creator of Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and now Pluribus quite charmingly opens his speech by shouting out fellow nominee Valerie Chu, a former writer\u2019s room assistant on Better Call Saul now nominated for her work on The Pitt<\/a>.<\/p>\n And he still quite charmingly manages to address the political moment, of sorts, by jokingly scoffing at Pluribus\u2019s world \u201cin which everybody gets along \u2013 that\u2019s so sci-fi.
