(ABC News: Lily Nothling)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This is not an easy option for a job as a male \u2014 you really have to be able to relate to children \u2026 and I think sometimes men struggle to be vulnerable,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The proportion of male educators in Australia has been falling for decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Men now represent just 17.6 per cent of primary school teaching staff, and 38.5 per cent of high school teachers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Without steps to remedy the disparity, researchers say those numbers will continue to dwindle.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s driving the decline?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Education researcher Kevin McGrath from the Australian Catholic University said the declining trend was the result of two key forces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Firstly, there is a large economic factor, and that is, on average and compared to women, men can earn more in other industries,&#8221; Dr McGrath said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Second, there are social expectations around who belongs in the teaching profession \u2014 teaching is often associated with stereotypical traits of being caring and nurturing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A drawing by a child of a male teacher at the front of a classroom with smiling students.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/4927c997c170ac3f0cd9df7517b13c56\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ryan Brown says teaching can be a challenging job for men if they struggle being vulnerable.
