Every grand final adds one line to a ledger that\u2019s been running since 1908. Most of it gets forgotten by Monday. Some of it never will be. Ahead of this year\u2019s decider on 4 October, here are the numbers that still stand.<\/p>\n
The 40-point wipeout<\/p>\n
In 2008, Manly-Warringah did something no team has done before or since in an NRL grand final: they won by 40 points, beating Melbourne Storm 40-0. It remains the biggest winning margin in grand final history. Grand finals are usually tense, low-scoring, decided-in-the-last-ten-minutes affairs \u2014 Manly\u2019s 2008 decider was the opposite of that on every level, and it\u2019s the standard every blowout since has been measured against and fallen short of.<\/p>\n
Eleven grand finals, one player<\/p>\n
Norm Provan holds a record that gets less attention than it deserves: eleven grand final appearances, more than any player in the game\u2019s history. Provan played through St George\u2019s legendary run in the 1950s and 60s \u2014 a club that won eleven consecutive premierships between 1956 and 1966, a streak that will almost certainly never be matched under a modern salary cap. Provan was there, on the field, in every one of those deciders. Eleven grand finals is a career most players would take on its own; Provan won essentially all of them.<\/p>\n
The highest-scoring decider<\/p>\n
South Sydney\u2019s 42 points in the 1951 grand final is still the most any team has scored in a decider. Rugby league in 1951 looked nothing like it does now \u2014 no video referee, none of the modern ruck-speed rules \u2014 but the scoreline has survived 75 years of the game changing around it.<\/p>\n
Cameron Smith\u2019s ledger<\/p>\n
No single player\u2019s name appears on more NRL records than Cameron Smith\u2019s. Across a career that ran from 2002 to 2020, Smith set the marks for most games played (430 \u2014 the only player ever to pass 400), most career wins (310), most goals kicked (1,295), and most tackles made (16,917). He won three premierships as Melbourne\u2019s captain \u2014 2012, 2017 and 2020 \u2014 with two further grand final wins, in 2007 and 2009, later stripped from the club over salary cap breaches. Across his grand final appearances specifically, Smith scored 44 points \u2014 more than any player in the competition\u2019s history. Most of his records are the kind that get broken eventually. Given how the game has evolved toward shorter, more physically demanding careers, 430 games might not be.<\/p>\n
Why it matters this year<\/p>\n
None of these records are likely to fall on 4 October. That\u2019s not really the point of a list like this. It\u2019s a reminder of how long the ledger is, and how rare it is for anyone to write a new line on it \u2014 which is exactly why the teams playing for it this year will empty themselves trying.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Every grand final adds one line to a ledger that\u2019s been running since 1908.
