Former Test wicketkeeper Matthew Wade has called time on his playing career, with the 38-year-old opting to pull up stumps with the Hobart Hurricanes.<\/p>\n

After nine seasons in purple and a Big Bash League<\/a> career spanning 119 games, Wade announced on Thursday he wouldn\u2019t be going around for another summer.<\/p>\n

Wade retired from international cricket two years ago but kept playing in the BBL and for Tasmania in the one-day competition.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

He transitioned into a role with the Australian team as a wicketkeeping and fielding coach last summer and is understood to not be pursuing any overseas playing opportunities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wade played 225 games for the national team across all three formats, including 36 Tests in stints as wicketkeeper and a specialist batsman.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

The Hobart-born big-hitter played a key role in the 2021 Twenty20 World Cup semi-final, whacking a 17-ball 41 against Pakistan as Australia went on to lift the trophy.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Wade made his first-class debut for Victoria in 2007 and won four Sheffield Shield titles for the state, including two as captain, before shifting to Tasmania.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

He played for the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades across the first six editions of the BBL before moving to the Hurricanes.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

He retires in ninth place on the competition\u2019s all-time leading run charts with a tally of 2978. <\/p>\n

\u201c(He) is one of those cricketers you always wanted on your side,\u201d Hurricanes head coach Jeff Vaughan said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe competed incredibly hard every time he walked onto the field and had the ability to change a game very quickly. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut equally important has been what he has passed on to the players around him. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe has a fantastic cricket brain and has always been willing to share his knowledge and challenge those around him to get better.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Wade finishes as the third-highest run scorer for the Hurricanes with 2446, behind Ben McDermott (3184) and D\u2019Arcy Short (2706).\u00a0 <\/p>\n

He made 90 appearances for Hobart, the second most for the franchise behind McDermott (115).<\/p>\n
