Lena Dunham and her husband, Luis Felber, have welcomed their first child via a surrogate.<\/p>\n

The 40-year-old actor and screenwriter shared the news in a Vogue op-ed<\/a> on Wednesday, describing the \u201cdizzy joy\u201d she felt after witnessing the birth of their daughter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI sat on a hospital bed, between the legs of a woman I hadn\u2019t known a year ago, waiting for a glimpse of this person who I had been waiting for with something related to patience, but also none at all,\u201d said Dunham, who is best known for creating and starring in the hit HBO show Girls<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She remained focused on her surrogate throughout, \u201cin awe at her concentration, her period of quiet followed by what sounded like a roar\u201d. It wasn\u2019t until she heard her baby\u2019s cries that she remembered to look down.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw her face, gasping just as she did. Her eyes, wide and unfocused, taking in the light and shadow, blinking rapidly,\u201d Dunham said of her daughter, who arrived 13 days later than expected. She did not reveal when her daughter was born or her name.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Hello\u2019, I said. \u2018I\u2019m your mama. You \u2026 you look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We\u2019ve been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dunham, who released the buzzy memoir Famesick <\/a>in April, has long struggled with fertility issues. For nearly 20 years, she suffered debilitating pain from advanced endometriosis, and in 2017, at the age of just 31, she underwent a preventive total hysterectomy<\/a>, removing her uterus and cervix.<\/p>\n

The award-winning writer and director has been open about the emotional weight of undergoing such a procedure, describing her grief in a 2018 Vogue op-ed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe children who could have been mine do break my heart, and I walk with them, with the lost possibility, a sombre and wobbly walk as I regain my centre,\u201d she wrote at the time. \u201cI made a choice that never was a choice for me, yet mourning feels like a luxury I don\u2019t have. I weep, big stupid sobs, alone in the bathtub or in the area where, in a terribly cliche turn, I have started crafting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dunham first teased that she was exploring the process of surrogacy in June 2025, and the embryo transfer took place in November. In her recent Vogue op-ed, she described the experience of meeting her surrogate for the first time, and the nervous anticipation they shared upon waiting for doctors\u2019 results.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I got to know our surrogate and to trust her, the feelings I thought would be there somehow weren\u2019t: namely jealousy, that this woman could do for a child \u2013 for my child \u2013 what I could not. Carry her safely in her body, use her form to feed and house her, regulate the baby\u2019s ever-evolving nervous system with steadiness, heart and breath,\u201d Dunham wrote. \u201cInstead, I felt a different kind of jealousy \u2013 towards said baby, for the chance to be tucked into someone who radiated such safety.\u201d<\/p>\n
