The company has repeatedly made it clear that it does not want to release a successor simply because newer handheld PCs can outperform the original Steam Deck.

Instead, the next generation needs to provide a substantial enough improvement to justify replacing Valve’s existing hardware. That philosophy remains intact even as RAM and storage shortages continue to push component costs upwards.

Speaking to IGN, Valve software developer Pierre-Loup Griffais said the current memory situation has “not really” changed the company’s plans for Steam Deck 2, with Valve continuing to target what he described as a “very delineated performance improvement”.

Valve Still Wants a Meaningful Generational Upgrade

Rather than releasing a slightly faster Steam Deck, Valve wants the eventual successor to represent a clearly noticeable step forward.

That stance matches comments the company has made over several years, with Griffais previously stressing that Valve would wait until available hardware could deliver a worthwhile performance increase without sacrificing the characteristics that made the Steam Deck appealing in the first place.

Exactly what that performance target looks like remains unknown. Valve has yet to disclose specifications for Steam Deck 2, nor has it provided a release window. The ongoing memory shortage could still influence when those plans become practical. Griffais acknowledged that Valve continues to monitor component pricing and availability, even if the company’s intended performance target has not changed.

That is particularly relevant given how much the same supply pressures have already affected Valve’s wider hardware business. Earlier this year, the company said rising memory and storage costs forced it to reconsider pricing and launch schedules for products including Steam Machine and Steam Frame.

Valve Is in No Rush to Launch Steam Deck 2

For now, there appears to be little interest in rushing Steam Deck 2 out simply to keep pace with newer handheld PCs.

The original Steam Deck helped establish Valve as a serious hardware player again, eventually leading into products such as Steam Machine, Steam Controller and Steam Frame. Valve now appears comfortable waiting until the technology and economics line up for its next handheld.

That may mean a longer wait, particularly while memory prices remain volatile, but the target itself has not shifted. Whenever Steam Deck 2 arrives, Valve still wants it to feel like a genuine new generation rather than an incremental spec bump.

Steam Deck 2 Performance Ambitions Remain Unchanged Despite rising memory costs causing headaches across the hardware industry, Valve…

[6
64,63,105
post-895074","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-technology","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-technology
["GET
