(Supplied: NASA Goddard\/UCLA\/JHU APL)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That happens because a surface impact unsettled the Moon&#8217;s bedrock dust and soil, known as regolith, making it less dense and therefore less able to retain heat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The large extent of this &#8216;cold spot&#8217; is striking, scientists say, because it shows that impacts can modify the Moon&#8217;s surface far beyond the crater itself,&#8221; NASA said in a blog post on its website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;These physical changes could affect how rover wheels interact with the surface, for instance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How often do Moon strikes happen?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">NASA says that impacts involving &#8220;space rocks and other objects&#8221; on the Moon&#8217;s surface happen reasonably frequently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Pockmarked since ancient times, the moon bears some of the solar system&#8217;s largest impact craters, including one that stretches more than 2,400km across.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">About 140 new craters are identified across the lunar surface each year, according to the US space agency.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A greyscale image showing the full extent of the Moon's surface, dotted by hundreds of circular crater marks.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/9fa85f3e378668fc432b376b88843a94.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The McGetchin crater, indicated by a black arrow in an image showing the extent of other craters. (Supplied: NASA Goddard\/Intuitive Machines\/Robert Wagner)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Of those, most of them are caused by &#8220;microscopic projectiles&#8221; that create craters too small to be picked up by the LRO&#8217;s photography.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the spacecraft can still capture craters that measure about nine metres in width, at the smallest, made by rocks measuring just over a metre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In assessing the images taken by the LRO&#8217;s two cameras, scientists have been able to identify and map &#8220;landslides, landers, seismic faults and even hints of lava tubes&#8221;, NASA said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-19\/nasa-images-show-moon-crater-caused-by-spacex-rocket\/107053592\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA photos of Moon crater<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A NASA spacecraft circling the moon is providing the sharpest views yet of a crater carved by a crashing SpaceX rocket.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Researchers often analyse close-up images of small parts of the Moon&#8217;s surface, but also occasionally look at wider-scale photos showing a larger area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Wagner said he spotted the McGetchin crater because NASA&#8217;s LRO software flagged shifts in the lunar surface by highlighting them in different shades in the wide-scale before and after photos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">NASA said the process often picks up many &#8220;false alarms&#8221;, and so Mr Wagner said he needed to verify the McGetchin discovery by looking for &#8220;small fuzzy halos around pixel\u2011wide bright points, which indicate splashes of regolith around a new crater&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">His team then compared those wide-scale images to the close-up images taken of the same area which exposed the size, shape and surrounding terrain of the crater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This latest impact churned the lunar surface for more than 100km, with dust and rocky soil hurled away at a higher angle than expected, according to Mark Robinson, a chief scientist for the LRO&#8217;s cameras who works at Intuitive Machines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Robinson was the lead author for one of two studies that reported the LRO&#8217;s new findings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This event constitutes a statistically rare, effectively once-in-a-lifetime observation,&#8221;
