In 1967, Monkeemania was sweeping the country. \u201cI told people I would outsell The Beatles, and they laughed at me,\u201d impresario Don Kirshner once recalled. \u201cThen the first album sold four million.\u201d That first album which led the television foursome of Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork to outsell The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys and, well, everybody else in 1967 is being revisited (again) with a new 3CD\/1LP box set due October 30 from Rhino.<\/p>\n

The basis of this set is Rhino Handmade\u2019s long out-of-print 4CD box set from 2014<\/a>.\u00a0 The 60th anniversary version opens with the original stereo album on vinyl only.\u00a0 It then continues with 3 CDs containing most of the material that premiered on the 2014 set.\u00a0 The CDs open with the original mono album plus four rehearsals and demos.\u00a0 That classic LP features seven compositions by Tommy Boyce, six with Bobby Hart and one with Steve Venet, including \u201c(Theme from) The Monkees,\u201d \u201cI Wanna Be Free\u201d and the No. 1 hit \u201cLast Train to Clarksville.\u201d The album also has tunes from Mike Nesmith (\u201cPapa Gene\u2019s Blues\u201d) David Gates (\u201cSaturday\u2019s Child\u201d), Carole King and Gerry Goffin (\u201cTake a Giant Step,\u201d \u201cSweet Young Thing,\u201d co-written with Nesmith) and Goffin and Russ Titelman (\u201cI\u2019ll Be True to You\u201d).<\/p>\n

The second disc continues with eighteen TV Versions, Alternate Takes, and Radio Spots including an alternate vocal take by Nesmith on \u201cThe Kind of Girl I Could Love;\u201d mono TV mixes of \u201cI Wanna Be Free,\u201d \u201cYou Just May Be the One,\u201d \u201cSaturday\u2019s Child,\u201d and more; two takes of Goffin and King\u2019s \u201cSo Goes Love;\u201d and two version of the famous \u201c(Theme From) The Monkees.\u201d\u00a0 The third and final disc of the box, Backing Tracks and Demos, culls fifteen tracks from the earlier box including master backing tracks for \u201cLet\u2019s Dance On,\u201d \u201cThis Just Doesn\u2019t Seem To Be My Day,\u201d \u201c(Theme From) The Monkees\u201d and \u201cTomorrow\u2019s Gonna Be Another Day,\u201d among other favorites.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s missing?\u00a0 This iteration of the box has dropped a handful of then-new 2014 stereo mixes as well as two versions of \u201c(I Prithee) Do Not Ask for Love.\u201d Also missing is Davy Jones\u2019 1965 Colpix debut David Jones (in both mono and stereo) and its associated single sides, as well as six early singles from Michael Blessing, a.k.a. Nesmith.<\/p>\n

The Monkees has been released multiple times before in expanded format on CD, in 1994, 2006, and 2016 as well as various vinyl editions including a 2021 deluxe vinyl set from Rhino\u2019s Run Out Groove arm<\/a>. Although this new 3CD\/1LP version doesn\u2019t present anything new, it\u2019s a good catch-up for those who didn\u2019t purchase the 2016 edition.\u00a0 Micky Dolenz has penned new liner notes for this set.<\/p>\n
