{"id":895988,"date":"2026-09-18T01:48:17","date_gmt":"2026-09-18T01:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/895988\/"},"modified":"2026-09-18T01:48:17","modified_gmt":"2026-09-18T01:48:17","slug":"augustas-pioneering-abalone-ranch-winding-down-amid-mounting-losses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/895988\/","title":{"rendered":"Augusta&#8217;s pioneering abalone ranch winding down amid mounting losses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The world&#8217;s first ocean-ranched abalone operation is winding down on Western Australia&#8217;s southern coast as export prices fall and losses rise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2019, the business was <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/rural\/2019-09-15\/aquaculture-goldrush-boosts-wa-regional-towns\/11508050\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/11508050\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">riding high on an export &#8220;gold rush&#8221; to Chinese consumers<\/a>, making it the biggest employer in Augusta.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Locals were employed to dive and harvest abalone off artificial reefs in Flinders Bay, as well as process the molluscs at a nearby facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Now, Rare Foods Australia (RFA) is winding down the business, having accumulated losses of more than $25 million as of June last year, according to financial documents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A gloved hand holding abalone.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/e0c8d4ecff4c2fff8f060f6df006c67f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The molluscs are considered a delicacy in a number of Asian countries. (ABC News: Nicholas Martyr)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The company&#8217;s financial hardship comes amid a slump in the global abalone market, driven by drastically expanded supply from China&#8217;s farmed abalone industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The company&#8217;s 2024\u201325 financial report, lodged with the corporate regulator earlier this month, shows RFA sustained a yearly loss of $4,833,469, and that its net assets had halved from $9.6 million to $4.7 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A wind-down strategy adopted in 2025 included workforce restructuring and reductions in operating expenditure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">By June, it had delisted from the Australian Securities Exchange to &#8220;reduce the significant costs associated with ASX listing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The company also stopped seeding juvenile abalone into its artificial reefs in Augusta.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">RFA declined ABC&#8217;s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Family founder leaves industry<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After founding the company, then known as Ocean Grown Abalone in 2011, long-time managing director Brad Adams left RFA and the wider seafood industry earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Having followed his father&#8217;s footsteps into the industry, he said stiff competition from Chinese producers had effectively halved export prices for greenlip abalone.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Windswept fisherman looks out to see with coast in background\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/db34ab19f6a00fcf6c9359781374c9e9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Brad Adams says adapting to changed conditions is essential, but not always possible. (ABC South West WA: Jon Daly)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We were probably averaging around $55 to $60 a kilogram. Ranched abalone is now around $30, $35,&#8221; Mr Adams said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Any business that loses half its margin that quickly has to respond and adapt pretty quickly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Sometimes you can&#8217;t adapt, and you just have to look for other opportunities, and that&#8217;s not the end of the world either.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Aquaculture output &#8216;halved&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A drastic expansion over two decades has seen the Chinese industry reach production of around 200,000 tonnes per year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The result has been a flooded Chinese market, once the biggest consumer of Australian abalone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Adams said other big players were also exiting Australia&#8217;s aquaculture industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s probably halved production in the last two years,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last year, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/rural\/2025-06-02\/tasmania-abalone-export-sales-in-decline\/105323974\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105323974\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two Tasmanian farms closed<\/a>, including an operation at Bicheno owned by Yumbah Aquaculture, Australia&#8217;s largest producer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An aerial picture of an abalone farm on a beach.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/b5bbe27bb3160bf9c649bba412f0c32e.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Yumbah Aquaculture&#8217;s Kangaroo Island facility, which has operated for more than 30 years.
