The two projects combined cost $436,000, with the track project accounting for $330,000 and the tennis court work totaling $106,000.

Rick Ramos, head coach of Grandview’s track and field program, said the updates were necessary. “We are updating the track, it had been ten years. There were some holes, a lot of use from the public, I mean a lot of use. Our first two lanes were getting down where the surface was kind of deteriorating,” Ramos said.

The deteriorating track surface had created safety concerns for athletes. The older, harder surface contributed to a higher rate of injuries among runners. “The softness of the track makes a difference. Before the [previous renovation 10 years ago], it was a harder surface and we had a lot of injuries with shin splints, and we’ve gone almost minimal to hardly any of those issues,” Ramos said.

The tennis courts presented their own challenges. The previous surface had developed cracks that altered the trajectory of the ball, creating unpredictable playing conditions. The new surface eliminates those problems and allows Grandview to host tennis matches on campus rather than playing all matches on the road.

Beyond improving conditions for athletes, the renovations have expanded the school’s capabilities. A javelin runway was added to the track, making Grandview eligible to host regional and district track events.

Ramos emphasized that the improvements benefit not just the school’s athletes but the broader community. “The public will notice a difference,” he said.

The school is asking the public and community members who use the facilities to help maintain them by avoiding riding bikes, mopeds, or other vehicles on the track. “The more we can kind of have the community help us and help support us and just take care of it, then the longer we get to have it,” Ramos said.

Construction crews are currently finishing the track resurfacing work. They will return at a later date to paint the lane lines. The football stadium is expected to reopen Friday night for Grandview’s football game against Prosser, allowing the community to see the renovated facilities in action.

COPYRIGHT 2026 BY APPLE VALLEY NEWS NOW.
