Part sometimes excruciating dark comedy, part sci-fi mindwarp and part suspense thriller whose grip bids fair to surprise at San Sebasti\u00e1n. Written and starring Berto Romero<\/a>, one of Spain\u2019s top stand-ups, playing opposite Belen Cuesta (The Endless Trench\u201d) and an ineffable Javier Camara (\u201cTalk to Her\u201d). Spanish pay TV\/SVOD colossus Movistar Plus, El Terrat, a Mediapro Studio company, and Ikiru Films, produce a typical genre cocktail for Romero, much directed with virtuosity by Javier Ruiz Caldera as a series of millimetrically calculated five-minute sequence shots. Set in 1974, after a night on the tiles, Ana, 19, is dispatched by her wealthy family to Spain\u2019s Women\u2019s Protection Board, a Francoist state-backed institution confining young women in the guise of moral \u201creform.\u201d Arcadia Motion Pictures, behind the Oscar-nominated \u201cRobot Dreams\u201d and Sorogoyen\u2019s \u201cThe Beasts,\u201d produces. JH<\/p>\n \n\tHorizontes Latinos<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cAshes,\u201d (Diego Luna, La Corriente del Golfo, Animal de Luz Films, Inicia Films, Perro Azul)<\/p>\n \n\tLauded actor Diego Luna (\u201cY tu mam\u00e1 tambi\u00e9n,\u201d \u201cAndor\u201d) steps behind the camera to helm the adaptation of Brenda Navarro\u2019s critically acclaimed feminist novel \u201cEating Ashes.\u201d The film stars Anna Diaz (\u201cLa Cocina\u201d) and Adriana Paz, who shared the Cannes best actress award with Zoe Salda\u00f1a, Selena Gomez and Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n for \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez.\u201d The heartfelt drama trails Lucila, a young woman who leaves Mexico with her young brother to reunite with their distant mother in Madrid. Luna also produces via his La Corriente del Golfo label, founded alongside Gael Garc\u00eda Bernal. Luxbox handles sales. Martinessi\u2019s sophomore feature is set in 1959, where the charismatic titular performer returns to Buenos Aires at the height of a strict military regime. When the popular young man is found dead after a show, the culprit becomes even harder to find within this regime built on silence and fear. Luxbox handles world sales. Adela, a sound artist recording endangered languages travels to the Peruvian highlands in a film which weaves present and past \u2013 collective and personal memory and archive footage of the Catalan diaspora after the Spanish Civil War \u2013 speaking about family, forced exile, roots, memory and hybrid identity. \u201cA richly contemplative journey of physical and mental meanderings, beautifully combining 4K digital with Super 16,\u201d says Variety. \u201cAmbitious in scope yet intimate in focus,\u201d Far From the Trees\u201d \u201ccould well become an arthouse sleeper,\u201d it adds.
