September 18: The Mets issued a statement from Green about Young\u2019s status today, which reads \u201cAs good as could be expected, or hoped for, given what we saw last night. All the tests that were ran, we got the right kind of results\u2026 Everything we have heard has been really optimistic from the recovery standpoint. I\u2019m relieved, I think everybody is\u2026 All in all about as good as we could have hoped for.\u201d Young was officially placed on the concussion injured list with infielder Ronny Mauricio<\/a> recalled in a corresponding move.<\/p>\n

September 17: Tonight\u2019s Mets-Phillies games featured one of the scariest injuries of the 2026 season. New York first baseman Jared Young<\/a> appeared to be knocked unconscious in a collision with pitcher\u00a0Nolan McLean<\/a>. Young was able to give the fans at Citi Field a thumbs up as he was carted off the field and transported to a hospital for evaluation.<\/p>\n

Interim manager Andy Green<\/a> provided a fairly encouraging update postgame, most notably revealing that Young has full use of his extremities (video provided by SNY<\/a>). Young is unsurprisingly dealing with \u201creal concussion symptoms\u201d but results of a CT scan at the hospital were negative. \u201cIt feels at this point in time like we\u2019ve avoided the scariest outcomes,\u201d Green said. \u201cThat was a terrifying moment on the baseball field. It took him a while to come to, really scary collision.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com provided video<\/a> of the collision immediately after the injury. It occurred in the top of the sixth in an eventual 3-0 Philadelphia win.\u00a0Justin Crawford<\/a> hit a slow roller a few feet inside the first base line. Young and McLean got crossed up on who would pursue the ball and who would cover first base. Young got to the bag as the ball was approaching the base and stretched for it while trying to keep his foot on the bag. McLean, who was running in that direction, reached down for the ball at the same time. The pitcher\u2019s leg wound up hitting Young in the side of his head and seemed to immediately knock him unconscious.<\/p>\n

This will surely end Young\u2019s season \u2014 even a minimal stint on the concussion list would keep him out until the final weekend \u2014 but the immediate concerns were obviously beyond baseball. The Mets figure to provide further updates in the next few days.<\/p>\n

Young, 31, has been a nice find in a rough year for the Mets, hitting .266\/.330\/.429 with nine homers across 342 plate appearances. A former 15th round pick who has played for three teams and had a stint in Korea in 2024, Young has earned his first extended big league opportunity this season.
