(ABC News: Loretta Lohberger)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Seager likes to knit alone so he can focus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But, for others, craft is a way to connect with people.<\/p>\n<p>Looking after each other through craft<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Once a week in Hobart&#8217;s northern suburbs, the Glenorchy Library Knitting Group meets. (ABC News: Loretta Lohberger)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Norma Kelaart joined the group after moving to Tasmania in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I needed some company of other women to chat with and relax with and have a joke and a laugh,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>One part of a broader brain health plan<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr McKay said there was not enough evidence to prove that activities like knitting and crochet helped prevent dementia \u2014 many of the studies were observational and self-reported, not randomised clinical trials that look specifically at dementia risk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-04-14\/staying-upright-crochet-and-healing-power-of-knitting-needles\/103700364\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The magical healing power of crochet<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The steady click of needles and hooks on couches around Australia tells us that knitters have been onto the very real therapeutic benefits of crochet for a long time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But she said the many clear benefits meant craft activities could be an important part of a broader lifestyle brain health program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Alongside exercise and diet and sleep and stress reduction \u2026 [and] taking care of your cardiovascular health, your metabolic health \u2014 all of the things that we know are good for our mental health in the short term and our brain health long term \u2014 this can sit really nicely and neatly in there,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We know that social connections are a really important part of long-term brain health, we know that having purpose and meaning in life are a really important part of brain health, so it can fulfil those requirements in a really lovely, non-digital way.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Will Seager taught himself to knit nine years ago.
