With his \u201cResident Evil\u201d now in cinemas, filmmaker Zach Cregger is now turning towards his next feature \u2013 \u201cThe Flood\u201d.<\/p>\n

The property was famously set up at Netflix who tried to court Cregger to direct, but the two reached an impasse over Netflix not wanting to do a theatrical release \u2013 and Cregger wouldn\u2019t get on board unless he got a firm one.<\/p>\n

The film, and Cregger, ultimately ended up at Warner Bros. Pictures, where he\u2019s opted to direct it rather than the \u201cWeapons\u201d spin-off \u201cGladys\u201d which he\u2019s only producing. <\/p>\n

Now, talking to Men\u2019s Health<\/a>, Cregger confirmed \u201cThe Flood\u201d is his next film, with shooting to begin early next year ahead of a Summer 2028 release:<\/p>\n

\u201cI just love the story, dude. That movie is about something in a real way that\u2019s important to me. It\u2019s another bizarre narrative structure in the way that \u2018Weapons\u2019 and \u2018Barbarian\u2019 are, but it\u2019s not jumping perspectives. It unfolds in a very unique way that I\u2019m really proud of. It\u2019s disturbing, but it\u2019s not a horror movie, although there are horror scenes in it. It feels intimidating to me. I\u2019m still not really sure how to make it, but I think that\u2019s a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked what inspired the film, he says it\u2019s a big ol\u2019 ode to a Stanley Kubrick classic:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not comparing it to \u201c2001,\u201d because I think \u201c2001\u201d is a true masterpiece in every sense of the word; there\u2019s a bizarreness to that movie that\u2019s really undeniable, and it\u2019s also a horror movie. I think \u201c2001\u201d is a really thrilling horror movie about human nature, and obviously about artificial intelligence, but it asks big questions. And I think, in that way, there\u2019s some similarity with \u2018Flood.\u2018\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Flood\u201d follows a deep-space exploration team aboard the vessel Spiritus Mundi. They pick up a strange, recurring signal from a remote planet and investigate \u2013 only to discover a bizarre alien artifact that starts warping time, reality, and the crew\u2019s minds.<\/p>\n

Cregger wrote the script for the film in just five days. Steven Spielberg will produce the project that is set for an August 11th 2028 release.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Warner Bros.
