Tim Read, a Greens politician who represented the state seat of Brunswick in Victoria<\/a>, has died aged 64 after a battle with melanoma.<\/p>\n

Read\u2019s death was announced on Saturday afternoon by Victorian Greens leader Ellen Sandell, who said he passed away earlier in the morning \u201csurrounded by family and love\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Victorian Greens are truly devastated to announce the death of Tim Read, our dear friend, colleague and beloved MP for Brunswick,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n

\u201cTim was a brilliant local MP, doctor and scientist \u2013 but to those who knew him, he was also the kindest, funniest and most fundamentally decent of people.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this time of incredible pain and sadness, we offer our deepest love to his wife Angela, his children Louisa and Martin, and all of Tim\u2019s family and friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

Read was first elected into state parliament at the 2018 election, where he won the previously Labor-held seat of Brunswick in Melbourne\u2019s<\/a> inner suburbs. He retained the seat at the 2022 election.<\/p>\n

Before being elected to parliament, he was a GP and medical researcher, and was the only qualified medical doctor sitting in Victorian parliament during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy diagnosis is serious, and I don\u2019t know exactly what the future holds,\u201d Read said in an opinion piece published in The Age<\/a> in February where he announced his retirement from politics.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cost of delay is always greater than the cost of acting early.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said he would use his remaining time in the parliament to fight against the closure of VicHealth, a health promotion foundation.<\/p>\n

Tributes flow on all sides of politics<\/p>\n

Victorian Premier Ben Carroll paid tribute to Read, praising his work before and during his political career.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr Tim Read was a man of principle and compassion,\u201d Carroll said. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe dedicated his life to serving his community. Long before he entered Parliament, he was a doctor and researcher in sexual health and HIV prevention. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn Parliament, he was a voice for Brunswick.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carroll said that he had spoken to Read earlier this week and was \u201cdeeply touched\u201d by their conversation.<\/p>\n

In a statement, leader of the opposition, Jess Wilson, called Read a \u201cthoroughly decent person\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cTim was a man of conviction… he brought sincerity, compassion and a strong sense of public duty to his work, earning respect across the Parliament,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cParliament often requires negotiation and compromise. I always enjoyed working with Tim. He was an honest broker, someone who listened, engaged in good faith and approached every discussion with respect and integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n
