{"id":89819,"date":"2025-08-23T10:57:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-23T10:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/89819\/"},"modified":"2025-08-23T10:57:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-23T10:57:12","slug":"foreigners-save-social-security-from-losing-contributors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/89819\/","title":{"rendered":"Foreigners &#8216;save&#8217; Social Security from losing contributors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The number of active contributors to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seg-social.pt\/ptss\/pssd\/home?dswid=3568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Social Security<\/a>, which funds retirements and other social benefits, would have begun to shrink last year if the participation of foreign workers in the national labour market had not increased, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jornaldenegocios.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jornal de Neg\u00f3cios<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, the number of active beneficiaries of the system increased by 2.4%, to approximately 5.6 million people, according to the Directorate-General for Social Security (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seg-social.pt\/ptss\/pssd\/home?dswid=3568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DGSS<\/a>) and the Institute of Informatics. <\/p>\n<p>However, in the data broken down by beneficiary origin \u2013 national or foreign \u2013 it is clear that there was only growth among foreign contributors (+15.1%), which more than offset a 0.1% decline among those with Portuguese nationality.<\/p>\n<p>With last year&#8217;s growth, foreign workers contributing to Social Security surpassed the one million mark for the first time, now representing almost a fifth of the contributors&#8217; universe.
