{"id":898545,"date":"2026-09-20T05:18:20","date_gmt":"2026-09-20T05:18:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/898545\/"},"modified":"2026-09-20T05:18:20","modified_gmt":"2026-09-20T05:18:20","slug":"coalition-vows-to-halve-fuel-excise-when-global-prices-spike-under-new-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/898545\/","title":{"rendered":"Coalition vows to halve fuel excise when global prices spike under new policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The opposition is promising to cut fuel costs when global prices spike, saying the measure would slash about $15 off the average tank of petrol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Under the policy announced today, the Coalition said it would halve the fuel excise when the global price of Brent crude oil averages $US100 a barrel over two weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Opposition Leader Angus Taylor said the initiative, called Fuel Price Shield, would be &#8220;fully funded&#8221; through the Coalition&#8217;s policy of cutting back the tobacco excise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Fuel Price Shield is all about providing relief at the bowser when it really counts,&#8221; Mr Taylor said in Canberra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When we see two weeks where the price has averaged over $[US]100 a barrel, which means we&#8217;re getting up towards $3 a litre at the bowser, there will be relief for Australians under a Coalition government.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said Australian motorists were feeling pain at the pump, amid a re-escalation of war in the Middle East pushing up the price of petrol.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to see $15 off a tank of petrol, 27 cents a litre, and that&#8217;s fully funded through our cut to the tobacco excise,&#8221;  Mr Taylor said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A list of petrol prices, with unleaded being almost $2.20 per litre, next to traffic lights.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/9ee423c3b4a5de066b244a303a2e4369.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Petrol prices have risen again amid a re-escalation of conflict in the Middle East. (ABC News: Erin Parke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But Luci Ellis, Westpac&#8217;s economic spokesperson, told ABC&#8217;s 7.30 last week the experience of the last fuel excise cut suggested that such a measure could help curb inflation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[In June and July] petrol prices came down, and that actually stopped all those fuel levies and extra price increases coming on in other prices, so if we can nip that in the bud, that would be a good outcome,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said because Australia was also an energy exporter, increasing gas prices would result in extra tax revenue for the government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[A fuel excise tax] is one way to redistribute what would otherwise be more tax revenue from the government,&#8221; she said last week.<\/p>\n<p>Government not considering future fuel excise cuts<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The government <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-02\/fuel-excise-cut-to-end-in-august-2\/106965630\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106965630\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">implemented a cut to the fuel excise,<\/a> the amount of tax the government collects on petrol, from April 1 until the end of July this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That saw the fuel excise cut from 52.6 cents a litre to 20.6 cents a litre, a discount of 32 cents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The measure was <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-02\/fuel-excise-cut-to-end-in-august-2\/106965630\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106965630\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extended until midnight on August 2<\/a>, but a rate rise in the excise rate meant the discount was 16 cents a litre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Chalmers was asked if the government would ever consider another fuel excise cut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not something that we&#8217;ve been discussing or considering, but we&#8217;ve shown a willingness over time to respond to the economic conditions,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Jim Chalmers leans forward with his elbow on knees and hands clasped while sitting in the chamber.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ed57fc420d1df53cc99adeb3094ba013.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Jim Chalmers dismissed the Coalition&#8217;s fuel excise cuts policy.
