{"id":89898,"date":"2025-08-23T11:43:18","date_gmt":"2025-08-23T11:43:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/89898\/"},"modified":"2025-08-23T11:43:18","modified_gmt":"2025-08-23T11:43:18","slug":"light-pollution-is-causing-birds-like-the-australian-magpie-lark-to-sing-for-longer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/89898\/","title":{"rendered":"Light pollution is causing birds like the Australian magpie-lark to sing for longer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Have you ever been woken up or kept awake by a particularly chirpy bird outside your window, even though the Sun is down?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Bright city lights may be to blame, according to a new study published in the journal <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1126\/science.adv9472\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Science<\/a>, which examined data from more than 4 million birdcalls around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The researchers found birds in areas with more artificial lighting at night sang for a longer portion of each day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Study co-author Brent Pease, a researcher at Southern Illinois University, said that light pollution was a growing source of concern for both human and wildlife health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;While the outcomes of this pollution source on human health are widely studied, how it is affecting wildlife across the world is still a developing topic,&#8221; Dr Pease said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Light pollution is on the rise, with some estimates suggesting that the night sky is getting brighter <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.abq7781\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by 10 per cent every year<\/a> in populated areas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Wildlife species evolved under reliable cycles of light and dark, and light pollution has altered those cues in a blink of an eye,&#8221;  Dr Pease said.Citizen science sensors power birdsong analysis<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The study drew on data from the BirdWeather project: a network of small sound recorders, used by volunteer citizen scientists from around the world including Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The recorded audio is uploaded to the BirdNET database, which uses an algorithm to identify which birds are singing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The researchers examined all data collected by BirdWeather-linked sensors between March 2023 and March 2024.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in a green forest holds hand-sized triangular green device on black tripod on a wooden stump.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/e42a2aa509314319d582a471bf97a44c\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Brent Pease with a portable BirdWeather sensor, which collects a range of environmental and location data in addition to birdsong. (Supplied: Brent Pease)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We were surprised by the magnitude of birds&#8217; responses,&#8221; Dr Pease said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While we expected some behavioural adjustment to the lights at night, we didn&#8217;t anticipate that it would be this impactful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The effects of light pollution varied dramatically depending on species.<\/p>\n<p>The extra early morning magpie-lark<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Australian magpie-lark (Grallina cyanoleuca) appeared to be more affected by light pollution than average.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">These little black and white birds are found in all mainland states of Australia and have a <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birdsinbackyards.net\/species\/Grallina-cyanoleuca\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">distinct &#8220;pee-o-wit&#8221; or &#8220;pee wee&#8221; call<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Study co-author Neil Gilbert, a researcher at Oklahoma State University, said the data revealed magpie-larks began their morning calls nearly 40 minutes earlier than usual in bright areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But there was a lot of seasonal and spatial variation for the magpie-larks \u2014 there were some areas and times of year where there wasn&#8217;t an effect, and other times when the effect was stronger,&#8221; Dr Gilbert said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Birdsong is often done to impress mates, and the researchers found light pollution had the strongest effects during breeding seasons.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Small black and white bird, a magpie lark, walking along grey asphalt.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/fab4893f6a57f6f605fa8c260efff19a\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The effects of light pollution on birds varied throughout the year. (iNaturalist: turnip2009, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2 Link_underlineOnHover__Wg_BQ\" href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc\/4.0\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CC BY-NC<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Diane Colombelli-Negrel, a behavioural ecologist at Flinders University who wasn&#8217;t involved in the research, said the study&#8217;s dataset was &#8220;impressive&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Understanding these patterns now, and their potential fitness impacts, is crucial for informing conservation strategies,&#8221; Dr Colombelli-Negrel said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But both she, and the researchers, recognised the citizen science dataset over-represented certain areas of the globe, such as the US, western Europe and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Are earlier birds a cause for concern?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There is increasing evidence that artificial light disrupts the behaviour and health of wildlife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Gisela Kaplan, an animal behaviour researcher at the University of New England, said \u00a0light pollution was particularly problematic for migratory birds, many of which fly at night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For example, shearwaters breeding on Muttonbird Island, off the cost of northern New South Wales, have been thrown off course by artificial lights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Kaplan, who wasn&#8217;t involved in the study, has been helping to relocate these seabirds found inland.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/science\/2024-08-09\/urban-light-pollution-animals-night-food-ecology-behaviour\/104146032\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How light pollution keeps wildlife up at night<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Neighbourhood lights can disrupt the lives of animals that are active during the day or night, but there are steps you can take to help them out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;People will love this data-rich paper, even if some of the interpretations would require further testing,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Pease and Dr Gilbert don&#8217;t yet have evidence that singing for longer is necessarily bad for all bird species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In their paper, they point out that while the loss of resting time could be bad for birds&#8217; health, it could also afford them extra foraging and breeding time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But they still believe more work needs to be done to make nights darker around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Insect die-offs, disorientation of nocturnally migrating birds, as well as disruption of seasonal hormonal rhythms have all been documented in wildlife species,&#8221;
