Remove items from your saved list<\/a> to add more.<\/p>\n AAA<\/p>\n Magda Szubanski, the comedian famous for the Kath & Kim character Sharon Strzelecki, has revealed that, while she is in remission, her recent cancer is \u201cincurable\u201d and likely to return.<\/p>\n In a 60 Minutes interview on Sunday night, the 65-year-old said she was recovering, while giving a sombre update on her condition: the median survival rate of her cancer was 8\u00bd years.<\/p>\n \u201cThe great news is I\u2019m in deep remission from my cancer,\u201d Szubanski told Tracy Grimshaw. \u201cIt means that you\u2019re not cured, but it\u2019s at bay. It\u2019s what\u2019s called an incurable relapse in cancer; it\u2019s almost sure that it will come back \u2013 it\u2019s a question of when and then how bad.<\/p>\n \u201cThe median survival rate is 8\u00bd years \u2026 I could go less, or I could go more.\u201d<\/p>\n Szubanski posted a video updating her followers on Instagram in May last year that she was diagnosed with a \u201cfast-moving\u201d stage-four<\/a> mantle cell lymphoma, before delivering the news in February that she had entered remission<\/a>.<\/p>\n According to the Leukemia Foundation<\/a>, mantle cell lymphoma is a rare, usually aggressive type of blood cancer that starts in the lymph nodes, part of the body\u2019s immune system.<\/p>\n Szubanski said that, during chemo, she was in immense pain and was \u201cso unwell [with a] tiredness, a fatigue \u2026 I\u2019ve never felt it in my life\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s like, \u2018Oh my god, I feel like my thighs. I feel like my bones are splitting\u2019. It was very unpleasant, and that\u2019s because my bone marrow was inflamed and was expanding,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was very painful. It would wake me up in the middle of the night. I\u2019d literally wake up going with my sort of dream voice saying \u2018You\u2019re dying, you\u2019re dying\u2019. So I really it was like, \u2018there\u2019s something wrong here\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n In the interview with Grimshaw, Szubanski opens up about more than just her cancer.<\/p>\n She also discusses the difficulties of being gay in the 1970s, and reveals what it was like learning, after her mother\u2019s death, that her mother had been raped at the age of eight.<\/p>\n That made Magda reflect on her own experiences of childhood abuse.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a very raw thing for me to speak about it publicly; it\u2019s also to relieve yourself of the shame, actually,\u201d Szubanski said.<\/p>\n Related Video<\/p>\n \u201cI was a little girl who was groomed. It took my strength away from me … I was a feisty little, fun kid, you know? And I think that shame, that hurt me.\u201d<\/p>\n The interview is a teaser for Szubanski\u2019s upcoming memoir I Can\u2019t Tell You But I Will<\/a>, out on September 29.<\/p>\n In typical good humour, Szubanski\u2019s said her results put her \u201cin good stead\u201d but that we all live with \u201cDamocles\u2019 sword hanging over our heads\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cBut for those of us who it hangs by only a couple of strands, it\u2019s a very different feeling. It is just a different state of consciousness. It\u2019s a different awareness of death.
