{"id":8998,"date":"2025-07-20T18:13:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-20T18:13:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/8998\/"},"modified":"2025-07-20T18:13:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-20T18:13:13","slug":"damaging-winds-and-rain-lash-south-west-and-perth-as-cold-front-swept-through-wa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/8998\/","title":{"rendered":"Damaging winds and rain lash South West and Perth as cold front swept through WA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Wild winter weather hit Perth on Sunday, with damaging winds and rain also lashing the South West.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">A severe weather warning was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for southern parts of the State due to a cold front on Sunday, which was expected to bring wind gusts of up to 90km\/h all the way from Mandurah to Cape Leeuwin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The windy conditions were also felt in Perth, with the cold front hitting the city on Sunday afternoon. But it wasn\u2019t enough to stop joggers or families from braving the blustery winters day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Six-year-old Charlotte Young and her two-year-old sister Isabel were making the most out of the rainy weather, splashing in puddles at Jualbup Lake in Shenton Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe were stuck indoors most of the morning and the girls were going a bit stir crazy but there was a break in the rain so we thought we\u2019d go out and get some fresh air,\u201d their mum Pip Young said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThere wasn\u2019t as many puddles as the girls had hoped but they still had a good time while the rain held off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Perth was drenched with more than 17mm of rain and peak winds of 61km\/h in Swanbourne and Rottnest Island.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/50d8ce294cb51bc529fd3d2d887bcb3f3d46d441.jpg\" alt=\"Scenes from a blustery winters day in Perth on Sunday. Kelsey Reid Credit: Kelsey Reid\/The West Australian<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">In the South West, Collie East had more than 21mm of rainfall and Cape Leeuwin experienced wind gusts of 76km\/h.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Senior bureau meteorologist Angeline Prasad said people in the South West experience a front as windy as this about five times a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cIt is a windier cold front than your typical winter cold front for WA so we are expecting windy conditions right across south WA as that cold front approaches and then moves through,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cHalf the southern WA will get some rainfall out of this system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThere\u2019s also that possibility we could see a severe thunderstorm across Perth this evening, although the chance is quite low, but it cannot be ruled out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">She said the cold weather could also produce hail in the South West as well as snow flurries on Bluff Knoll early on Monday and Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued a storm advice for parts of the Perth metropolitan, South West, and lower South West urging people to stay safe.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/5148493ca1fd9376568f55357badd2ccf68f555f.jpg\" alt=\"Scenes from a blustery winters day in Perth on Sunday. Kelsey Reid Credit: Kelsey Reid\/The West Australian<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">DFES were called out to 10 homes with roof damage and water leaks across the State.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Severe weather was forecast in the Perth metropolitan, Rottnest Island, Bunbury, Mandurah, Margaret River, Busselton, Augusta and Dunsborough, however, the warning was cancelled just before 4pm as winds eased.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Residents were advised to pack away or secure any outdoor furniture and trampolines that could be picked up by strong winds as well as preparing an emergency kit with a radio that runs on batteries, a torch, spare batteries and a first aid kit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The State is expected to get some reprieve from the wild weather on Tuesday before another cold front sweeps through the South West on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Perth Forecast <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Monday: 5-15C, shower or two<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Tuesday: 7-17C, showers<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Wednesday: 9-17C, showers<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Thursday: 6-15C, shower or two<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Friday: 4-16C, partly cloudy<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Saturday: 4-17C, sunny<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Wild winter weather hit Perth on Sunday, with damaging winds and rain also lashing the South West.
