"NHLNHL-The World Cup of Hockey 2028 (Credit: National Hockey League (NHL®) and National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA)) International hockey has been waiting for a shake-up, and the NHL has just delivered it. After years without its top players participating in high-stakes global tournaments, the league has announced plans to move ahead with the 2028 World Cup of Hockey. What makes this decision even more significant is that it will be organized without the involvement of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). For hockey fans, this could mark the long-awaited return of true international competition at the highest level.

NHL plans tournament without International Ice Hockey Federation support

On August 23, reports confirmed that the NHL will press forward with the 2028 World Cup of Hockey independently of the IIHF. The league’s deputy commissioner, Bill Daly, revealed that preparations are underway for an eight-team event. This decision highlights growing friction. That too between the NHL and the IIHF. Due to their struggles to align on international scheduling, player availability, and political concerns, the two organizations have cut ties with the IIHF for this tournament. The NHL gains more control over team selection, logistics, and broadcasting rights. Also, this could help create a streamlined product for fans worldwide.

Russia’s international ban and its possible impact on the World Cup of Hockey

A major factor in the NHL’s move may be the uncertain status of Russia. The IIHF has banned Russian participation in international tournaments since 2022. And a sanction that remains in effect, without IIHF oversight. The NHL could potentially invite Russia to the World Cup of Hockey, bringing some of its brightest stars back to the global stage. While this is still speculation, the possibility of Russia competing raises significant questions. That too about political implications, fan reception. And the league’s broader strategy for global representation.

Eight-nation format: What fans can expect from the World Cup of Hockey

Deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed that eight national teams will take part in the 2028 tournament. Although the full list of participating countries has not been released. The traditional powerhouses are Canada, the United States, Sweden, and Finland. All are expected to be included, as the format mirrors past versions of the World Cup of Hockey. This is creating a competitive structure that pits elite NHL talent against each other in national jerseys. For fans, this setup promises intense matchups. And the chance to see rivalries reignited on the international stage. The success of the recent Four Nations Face-Off proved the hunger for international hockey. And the 2028 edition looks poised to satisfy it, and if successful, this move could spark more frequent global tournaments organized by the NHL itself. This is restoring a missing piece of the sport for players and fans alike. Also Read: Toronto Maple Leafs’ Matthew Knies attends Grant Cruikshank and McKenna’s wedding in Wisconsin

NHL-The World Cup of Hockey 2028 (Credit: National Hockey League (NHL®) and National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA))…

[556
66988,64,63,66992,2065,66993,66994,66990,66989,575,66991,85
post-90058","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nhl","tag-2028-world-cup-of-hockey","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-bill-daly","tag-canada","tag-hockey-tournaments","tag-international-competition","tag-international-hockey","tag-international-ice-hockey-federation","tag-nhl","tag-russia-participation-ban","tag-sports
["GET
