Devils 3, Rangers 2: Jack Hughes<\/a>\u00a0scored the\u00a0tiebreaking goal with 2:12 remaining in the third period to give the New Jersey Devils a 3-2 win against the New York Rangers at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Monday.<\/p>\n

Hughes skated down through the right circle before cutting to the goal line and jamming the puck in from outside the post.<\/p>\n

It was the first preseason game for the Rangers. The Devils defeated the New York Islanders 2-1 on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Timo Meier<\/a> had a goal and an assist for the Devils. Jake Allen<\/a>\u00a0stopped all three shots he faced in the first period before giving way to Nico Daws<\/a>, who made 13 saves over the final two periods.<\/p>\n

Forwards Anthony Mantha<\/a>\u00a0(no points) and Luke Evangelista<\/a>\u00a0(assist) each made his debut with the Devils. Mantha signed a two-year, $9.5 million contract ($4.75 million average annual value) as a free agent on July 15. Evangelista was acquired in a trade with the Nashville Predators on Sept. 1 before signing a five-year, $36.25 million contract ($7.25 million AAV) that will begin in 2027-28 on Sept. 15.<\/p>\n

Anton Blidh<\/a> and Drew Fortescue<\/a>\u00a0scored for the Rangers. Dylan Garand<\/a>\u00a0made 28 saves.<\/p>\n

Nico Hischier<\/a> gave the Devils a 1-0 lead at 11:55 of the second period, flipping a backhand toward the net from the slot that deflected in off Rangers defenseman Urho Vaakanainen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Blidh tied it 1-1 at 16:05 when he ripped a wrist shot from above the right circle short side past Daws.<\/p>\n

The Devils went back ahead 2-1 at 19:10. Meier stole the puck behind the net and tucked in a wraparound at the right post.<\/p>\n

Fortescue tied it again at 7:07 of the third period, scoring with a wrist shot over Daws’ glove from just above the right circle.<\/p>\n

Rangers forward Adam Sykora<\/a>\u00a0left the game with a lower-body injury at 9:28 of first period after taking a hit in the corner from Devils defenseman Mikael Diotte<\/a>.
