The NHL BOG is meeting in N.Y. on Tuesday, and expansion is expected to be a \u201chot topic given what we\u2019ve learned over the last few months on that front.\u201d Houston and Dan Friedkin have been linked to a potential franchise<\/a>, but there may be \u201csome pushback\u201d from owners on the expansion idea. Sportsnet\u2019s Elliotte Friedman said, \u201cI\u2019m curious to see what\u2019s going to come out of this meeting. The Houston\/Austin thing<\/a> was supposed to be six-month plan. We\u2019re coming up on three, so we\u2019re halfway through it. A couple people said to me, \u2018Don\u2019t run too far ahead here.\u2019\u201d He added, \u201cI\u2019ve just heard \u2026 there\u2019s some opposition. I think we\u2019re going to find out on Tuesday how serious that opposition is or isn\u2019t\u201d (\u201c32 Thoughts,\u201d SPORTSNET.ca, 9\/21<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The NHL \u201cwill not say that either Houston or Austin are shoo-ins\u201d for the next round of expansion (at a price of $2B or more). In part, that is because the league office \u201cdoes not want to usurp the last-call rights\u201d of the BOG. Why not \u201cadd both?\u201d Florida (population 23.4 million) has two teams. Why \u201ccan\u2019t Texas (31.7 million) have three?\u201d (BOSTON GLOBE, 9\/19<\/a>). <\/p>\n
