The controversial fallout from Graham Rowntree\u2019s short stint in charge of Munster<\/a> has reignited following the publication of an extract from Peter O\u2019Mahony\u2019s forthcoming autobiography.<\/p>\n

Rowntree was sacked in October 2024 after Munster arrived back from a two-match South African tour, bringing an end to the former England prop\u2019s two-and-a-bit seasons as head coach at the Irish club.<\/p>\n

The ex-Leicester front-rower had succeeded current Bath boss Johann van Graan in the role in Limerick in 2022, and Munster went on to win the United Rugby Championship at the end of his first campaign in charge the following May.<\/p>\n

That trophy was a first for the province since their 2011 league triumph, but the optimism generated by this unexpected breakthrough success after a 12-year wait didn\u2019t last and Rowntree was unceremoniously sacked 17 months later.<\/p>\n

\u201cGet\u00adting nowhere\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Rowntree\u2019s tenure was heavily criticised by Conor Murray<\/a> when the long-serving Munster and Ireland scrum-half published his autobiography in September 2025, and the retired prop, who now coaches in Japanese rugby with Urayasu D-Rocks, is back in the firing line following the teaser released ahead of the launch of O\u2019Mahony\u2019s book.<\/p>\n

After captaining Munster to their URC final success away to the Stormers in Cape Town, O\u2019Mahony went on to feature heavily in Ireland\u2019s run to the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup in France.<\/p>\n

The back-rower\u2019s central contract with the IRFU was set to expire at the end of the 2023\/24 season, and he had told his agent that he wanted to stay on at Munster<\/a> the following season. While the IRFU would make a contribution, they would no longer fully fund O\u2019Mahony\u2019s salary due to his age, meaning that Munster would have to cover the balance.<\/p>\n

According to the All In extract published in the Sunday Independent<\/a> ahead of this Thursday\u2019s book launch by Penguin Sandycove<\/a>, O\u2019Mahony\u2019s agent was \u201cget\u00adting nowhere\u201d with Philip Quinn, Mun\u00adster\u2019s chief oper\u00adat\u00ading officer, and the player then learned that Rowntree wanted to meet him.<\/p>\n

The summit, which took place just over three weeks after Ireland\u2019s World Cup elimination<\/a>, didn\u2019t go well. \u201cVery quickly, alarm bells star\u00adted ringing,\u201d O\u2019Mahony reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cConor (Ridge, the agent) had been in touch with Philip Quinn about extend\u00ading my con\u00adtract to 2025, so it was a sur\u00adprise when Wig [Rowntree] said, \u2018I thought you were going to come in and tell me you were fin\u00adish\u00ading in July.\u2019 If that\u2019s what he thought, he hadn\u2019t got the mes\u00adsage from man\u00adage\u00adment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The situation flustered O\u2019Mahony<\/a>. \u201cWig, per\u00adhaps out of the best inten\u00adtions, wanted to tell me him\u00adself that Mun\u00adster would have no room for me when this sea\u00adson ended. I didn\u2019t under\u00adstand how he could think I\u2019d go from play\u00ading 80 minutes in a quarter-final of a World Cup to being f**king use\u00adless for Mun\u00adster six months later, but that\u2019s what he was sit\u00adting there telling me.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was talk\u00ading to me as if I\u2019d missed a sea\u00adson and a half, played a few games and was now wan\u00adder\u00ading in hop\u00ading Mun\u00adster would roll the dice again. He didn\u2019t want Mun\u00adster to take that bet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rowntree<\/a> went to dismiss O\u2019Mahony\u2019s claim that the IRFU would contribute to his salary in 2024\/25, insisting instead that he wasn\u2019t capable of playing on even though he believed that he could compete for a place in the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour.<\/p>\n

\u201cWig told me that my body wasn\u2019t good enough to play rugby next sea\u00adson. \u2018You\u2019ll thank me for this\u2019, he said. \u2018Your body\u2019s broken up. You\u2019ll thank me for this next year,\u2019 he kept telling me. He might not think I had a young man\u2019s body any more, but he was speak\u00ading to me like I was a child.\u201d<\/p>\n

The conversation left O\u2019Mahony furious. \u201cI was raging now. All the frus\u00adtra\u00adtions, all the effort of not just play\u00ading for Mun\u00adster, but the admin, the meet\u00adings, the meet\u00adings about meet\u00adings, sort\u00ading stuff off the field and all the other things that come with being a lifer \u2013 all of these things fuelled a resent\u00adment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a reas\u00adon\u00adable way to say to a 34-year-old, who had played for Mun\u00adster since he was 18, that there was no con\u00adtract exten\u00adsion bey\u00adond the sum\u00admer, but this wasn\u2019t it.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom where I was sit\u00adting, Mun\u00adster were being asked to put their hand in their pocket for the first time in a long time and they had noth\u00ading there. And the silence from the club in response to my agent\u2019s request, fol\u00adlowed by this meet\u00ading, seemed to be a pretty bad way of hand\u00adling it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The confrontation then ended with Rowntree allegedly throwing a pen across the floor of his office and telling O\u2019Mahony to go and pick it up and show how stiff he was. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018You\u2019re f***ing jok\u00ading me.\u2019 Imme\u00addi\u00adately he said, \u2018For\u00adget about that, that was a joke. You\u2019ve read it wrong.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve spent my adult life at the club, I said to myself, and this is what it\u2019s come down to now: Wig throw\u00ading a pen across the floor for me to fetch like a f***ing dog\u2026 The meet\u00ading had ended.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew this day was com\u00ading, I knew, as every pro\u00adfes\u00adsional knows, that the end will not neces\u00adsar\u00adily be pleas\u00adant, but I couldn\u2019t have ima\u00adgined it would be handled like this. This is busi\u00adness, I told myself after\u00adwards. It\u2019s just f***ing busi\u00adness. But I thought it was bad business.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Mahony went on to captain Ireland in their March 2024 Six Nations title-clinching win over Scotland, playing his last Test that July in South Africa. He retired from playing for Munster in May 2025, by which stage Rowntree was seven months gone from the club.<\/p>\n
