(Image credit: JAXA\/NASA)<a id=\"elk-231b77e4-b6c5-11f1-ad3d-fb3fe79c668a\"\/>Why it mattered<a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-231b7852-b6c5-11f1-87ee-5130fad7b61d-0\">Japan&#8217;s Hinode solar observatory, while led by JAXA, is a collaboration by Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe that has studied the sun for 20 years. Its Solar Optical Telescope is the first ever dedicated to measuring the strength and direction of the sun&#8217;s magnetic field at <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17160-sun-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17160-sun-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17160-sun-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the photosphere<\/a>, the surface of the sun, NASA has said.<\/p>\n<p>Hinode also carried two other instruments, an EUV imaging spectromenter and X-ray telescope, to &#8220;understand the causes of eruptions in the solar atmosphere and relate those eruptions to the intense heating of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17160-sun-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17160-sun-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17160-sun-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the corona<\/a> and the mechanisms that drive the constant outflow of solar material and radiation, the solar wind,&#8221; NASA added <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/about-hinode\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/about-hinode\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in an overview<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-17f5166a-b6c8-11f1-b0e1-4d9edb86fad1\">One strange coincidence of Hinode&#8217;s orbit, which circles the Earth once every 98 minutes, is its so-called &#8220;eclipse season.&#8221; During the summer months in the Northern Hemisphere, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/annular-solar-eclipse-nasa-october?trk=organization_guest_main-feed-card_feed-article-content\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/annular-solar-eclipse-nasa-october?trk=organization_guest_main-feed-card_feed-article-content\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/annular-solar-eclipse-nasa-october?trk=organization_guest_main-feed-card_feed-article-content\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hinode sees a solar eclipse on every orbit<\/a>, with the Earth eclipsing the sun for up to 10 minutes at a time. Because Hinode always faces the sun, its orbit allows for continous solar observations for nine months at a time.<\/p>\n<p>JAXA launched Hinode on an M-V rocket from the Uchinoura Space Center in Kagoshima, Japan. The mission was originally extended through 2020, with mission scientists hoping Hinode would last until 2022.
