That is fine, and that is great.\u201d<\/p>\n Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n Speaking at an energy forum on Wednesday, Tehan said the geopolitical changes in recent years, including the ongoing conflict over the strait of Hormuz, gave the Coalition the social licence to split energy from climate policy.<\/p>\n \u201cI think the Australian people, and you can feel it in the mood of the nation at the moment, want us to be much more sovereign, capable, be able to stand on our own two feet, and make sure that we can deal with the world with a strong economy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Tehan said the Coalition would \u201chandle emissions reduction separately\u201d with a policy released later this year.<\/p>\n The energy minister, Chris Bowen<\/a>, said the plan would take a \u201cchainsaw to the economy and household budgets\u201d and \u201cmake Australia poorer, weaker and less secure from global shocks\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThey want to take choice away from Australians \u2013 remove your ability to take control of your energy bills with a cheaper home battery, and pick a cheaper to run car,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Bowen said the Coalition\u2019s plan to \u201cstop renewables and household batteries\u201d and extend the life of existing coal power stations would mean households would be \u201cleft to pick up the bill of global shocks\u201d.<\/p>\n The treasurer, Jim Chalmers, described it as a \u201cOne Nation policy with a Liberal Party sticker on it\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cDan Tehan\u2019s latest brain fade would put a wrecking ball through the economy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is a plan for a smaller economy, lower wages, poorer workers and fewer jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n The energy policy reversal was similarly criticised by Kooyong MP, Monique Ryan, and acting Greens leader, Mehreen Faruqi, for taking the country backwards.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Coalition\u2019s plan is dumb, dangerous, and desperate climate denial which would make energy more expensive and unreliable,\u201d Dr Ryan said.<\/p>\n Faruqi also took aim at Labor after its resources minister, Madeleine King, marked the opening of the Beetaloo basin<\/a> with smiles.<\/p>\n
