(Image credit: Stoke Space)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-17757cd4-b6be-11f1-ace2-33d4649d2154\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/asteroid-mining-astroforge-docking-mission-2025\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/asteroid-mining-astroforge-docking-mission-2025\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/asteroid-mining-astroforge-docking-mission-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AstroForge<\/a> was founded in January 2022 with an ambitious goal in mind, which the blog post states: &#8220;to unlock the resources of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-17757cd4-b6be-11f1-ace2-33d4649d2154-1\">AstroForge will go after metals, which it plans to extract using a fleet of spacecraft spread throughout the final frontier. Manually controlling a large number of such probes would be a taxing and expensive enterprise, which explains why the startup developed Solo.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>The intelligence model is &#8220;designed to autonomously coordinate a spacecraft&#8217;s onboard functions,&#8221; Gialich wrote in the blog post. &#8220;Solo works on top of AstroForge&#8217;s existing deterministic, physics-based flight software, allowing the spacecraft to make decisions in real time during flight.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Achieving full mission autonomy is the &#8220;holy grail of spacecraft engineering,&#8221; he added. (Image credit: AstroForge\/SpaceX)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-558948bc-b6c2-11f1-98e7-4d4582906012\">Things will change on Autonomy-1, which will be a full-scale demonstration of Solo in Earth orbit.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The mission objective is deliberately straightforward: after Autonomy-1 separates from its launch vehicle, we do not intend to send the spacecraft a single command,&#8221; Gialich wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Autonomy-1 will transmit telemetry and science data back to Earth so that we can observe what the spacecraft is doing, understand the decisions Solo makes and collect science,&#8221; he added. &#8220;But that information will only flow one way \u2014 from the spacecraft to the ground.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Solo will also have to support the activities of a scientific payload \u2014 those of COMPASS (Compact Multi-Spectral Photometer for Space Science), a NASA heliophysics instrument that&#8217;s flying on the mission.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-75990a1c-b6c6-11f1-9f17-4d31cbfd5584\">AstroForge already has two space missions under its belt. The company sent a prototype <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34324-cubesats.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34324-cubesats.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34324-cubesats.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cubesat<\/a> called Brokkr-1 to Earth orbit in April 2023, but was unable to activate its refinery tech.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in February 2025, AstroForge&#8217;s Odin spacecraft launched to deep space along with Intuitive Machine&#8217;s IM-2 moon-landing mission. Odin was supposed to fly by and study a near-Earth asteroid, but AstroForge had trouble establishing communications with the spacecraft, which <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/private-spaceflight\/hope-is-all-but-lost-for-private-asteroid-probe-in-deep-space-the-chance-of-talking-with-odin-is-minimal\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/private-spaceflight\/hope-is-all-but-lost-for-private-asteroid-probe-in-deep-space-the-chance-of-talking-with-odin-is-minimal\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"technology\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/private-spaceflight\/hope-is-all-but-lost-for-private-asteroid-probe-in-deep-space-the-chance-of-talking-with-odin-is-minimal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ended up being lost<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Autonomy-1&#8217;s launch will be closely watched, and not just by people who care about asteroid mining.
