The lowdown

Twenty-three years old, born on 1 September 2003, out of Kyrgyzstan. Five foot seven, campaigning at 135lb, a Bantamweight who turned pro at 17 and won a regional title in Kazakhstan before most fighters his age had a fifth fight. Ten wins, three losses. Almost every win has come by choke or by decision. Every single loss has come from someone punching him until a referee stepped in. He is one fight away from a six-figure UFC contract, and the man in the way is a teammate he nearly came to blows with in sparring.

A Bishkek kid who kept finding necks

Akylbek came up through the fight scene in Bishkek, the Kyrgyz capital that has become one of the more productive talent wells in Central Asian MMA. He fought his first professional bout in June 2021, a decision win at a WEF card, and by September he had a doctor stoppage over Gani Adilserikov. He was 18.

The losses came early too. In December 2021 Teimur Zhaparov battered him for the best part of three rounds before the stoppage arrived with six seconds left on the clock. Akylbek was a teenager taking beatings in front of small crowds in Kazakhstan, and he went straight back in.

Then the run. Yunus Aliev, rear-naked choke. Serik Makul, decision. Nodir Alidodov, rear-naked choke. He was chaining scrambles into back takes with the sort of persistence that regional matchmakers hate, because it wins fights and it doesn’t sell tickets.

Champion at 19

March 2023 put his name on the marquee. Octagon 43 in Kazakhstan was billed as Akylbek uulu vs. Aidinov, and he took the Octagon Promotion Bantamweight title off Aivaz Aidinov with a triangle choke in the third round. Nineteen years old, 7-1, with a belt and a phone starting to ring.

ONE Championship came calling that summer.

Bangkok bit back

The Lumpinee run started well enough. On 1 September 2023, his 20th birthday, he outpointed Gadzhimurad Gasanguseynov over three rounds on ONE Friday Fights 31. That was the high point.

Four months later Khalim Nazruloev walked through him in the second round, Herb Dean waving it off after a barrage of punches. Then came August 2024 and the worst 15 seconds of his career, when he was stopped inside a quarter of a minute by Dzhokhar Eskiev, a left hook and ground-and-pound before the crowd had settled. Two fights, two knockout losses, and a promotion that had seen enough.

He was 20 years old and out of a major league contract.

Rebuilding, one choke at a time

Most fighters that age drift after that. Akylbek went home and got back to work. In October 2024 he took a fight at EFC Global 50 in Kyrgyzstan and needed 62 seconds to take Ozodbek Bobokulov’s back and squeeze.

Then he went hunting for rounds in America. On 6 December 2025 he fought Mo Miller for the American Fight Promotions Bantamweight title and had to go deep into the championship rounds to get it, finally sinking a rear-naked choke in the fourth. Four rounds of hard work for a regional belt in front of a fraction of the ONE audience. Four months later he was at the Meta Apex trying out for The Ultimate Fighter 34.

The punch at the tryouts

The tryout session in April got ugly. In a hard wrestling exchange with Cuba’s Sean Mora, heads clashed, Mora threw a punch, and Akylbek was left with a cut over his eye. Production told Mora he was gone. Daniel Cormier picked him anyway.

Akylbek landed with Michael Bisping and spent weeks in a house with the man who had opened him up. According to behind-the-scenes recaps for MMA Fighting, the two of them ended up playing silent, ice-cold games of pool against each other for hours, saying nothing, everyone else in the house watching like it was a hostage negotiation.

The rematch came in episode six, billed as settling the score. It was a wrestling match. Akylbek opened with a kick and shot, Mora hunted a choke from his back while Cormier hollered “You’re winning from the bottom” across the cage, and the Kyrgyz fighter kept grinding until the horn. Split decision. Dana White thought Mora had done more damage and wanted a third round. Akylbek got the nod and the semi-final spot.

Beating a friend to get there

The semi-final was worse, because it was Xavier Franklin, his closest mate in the house. Franklin had said it himself earlier in the season: “me and Ilimbek is cool, so if Ilimbek gets into it, we get into it.”

The week before the fight, Akylbek got his parents on a video call and thanked them at length, on camera, in front of a production crew. Not the usual TUF beat.

Then Franklin promised to put his lights out and Akylbek wrestled him for two straight rounds. The third turned completely. Franklin got free, dug into the body, opened up his nose and was closing in on the finish when Akylbek signalled an eye poke with a minute to go. Herb Dean stopped it, went to review, and restarted the fight. Both coaches objected. He survived to the bell and took the decision on the strength of those first two rounds.

The elbows in sparring

The final week of filming had one more flare-up in it. Already through to the final, Akylbek was dropping elbows from top position in sparring on Mehemmedeli Osmanli, his own teammate, and the assistant coaches had to pull them apart twice. Bisping, back from commentary duty in Perth, told them to get over it. Osmanli then went out and buggy-choked Christian Strong in the second round to book the other side of the final.

Those two meet on 26 September 2026 at the Meta Apex, the TUF 34 Bantamweight final on a card headlined by Raul Rosas Jr. and Raoni Barcelos. The house exhibitions don’t touch either man’s professional record. The contract at the end of it is very real.

Ilimbek Akylbek MMA Record and Fighter Stats

Name
Nationality
Weight Class
Date of Birth
Height
Pro Record
UFC Record Recent Fight Record

 DateEventOpponentResultMethod

 6-Dec-25AFP 104Mo MillerW4th Round Rear Naked Choke

26-Oct-24EFC Global 50Ozodbek BobokulovW1st Round Rear Naked Choke

 9-Aug-24ONE Friday Fights 74Dzhokhar EskievL1st Round TKO

 12-Jan-24ONE Friday Fights 47Khalim NazruloevL2nd Round TKO

1-Sep-23ONE Friday Fights 31Gadzhimurad GasanguseynovWUnanimous Decision

👉 Explore: Fightomic Rankings | Fightomic Bantamweight Rankings

The lowdown Twenty-three years old, born on 1 September 2003, out of Kyrgyzstan.
