Conspicuously, Spain was absent from O\u2019Neil\u2019s list. <\/p>\n
Sergio Garcia calls Valderrama the \u2018Augusta of Europe\u2019 but cast doubt on his favorite course returning to LIV\u2019s new schedule in 2027. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to realize we have a good business plan,\u201d he said. \u201cHopefully the tournament makes money. <\/p>\n
\u201cIf that\u2019s the case, we\u2019ll probably continue to come here. If it doesn\u2019t, it will be sad.\u201d<\/p>\n
Yet that does not mean LIV\u2019s arrangement with Valderrama is necessarily over. When O\u2019Neil\u2019s predecessor Greg Norman landed the treasured 1997 Ryder Cup venue in that dramatic coup four years ago, a deal was made to host five LIV tournaments over a period of seven years. <\/p>\n
And so one more event remains on the original contract, but the structure of the deal means LIV have no obligation to return to the Costa Del Sol straight away as part of their ambitious reincarnation. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re just waiting to see if it\u2019ll be 2027 or 2028,\u201d Valderrama\u2019s general manager Javier Reveriego tells TG. \u201cI would expect them to honour the contract. We don\u2019t expect anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n
LIV\u2019s transition towards a leaner schedule, however, means Valderrama could well be about to undergo an unusual fallow period without staging elite golf. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe will review once we have the info from them,\u201d says Reveriego. \u201cIf we don\u2019t do events for a few years, it\u2019s really not an issue. The club is fine. We\u2019ve always been linked to tournaments, but life will go on.\u201d<\/p>\n
As long as the event fits our club and our model, then we will definitely consider anything.<\/p>\n
Indeed, Valderrama was a regular European tour stop for five decades before LIV swooped in, hosting multiple editions of the season-ending Volvo Masters and then the Andalucia Masters. But speaking with TG back in June, Reveriego explained why Valderrama felt inclined to turn its back on its storied history with the \u201cold world\u201d circuit in favour of LIV four years ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn respect to players, we probably had higher expectations,\u201d he admitted. \u201cOur history puts the pressure on us to deliver good fields. This is obvious. We cannot just host any kind of event and, for us, having a venue like this, the mix is about having the best possible players. We were not entirely happy with the fields we were having and we managed to secure amazing fields with LIV.\u201d<\/p>\n
The concern at Valderrama, though, will be that LIV\u2019s chances of securing every one of its star names \u2013 many of whom owed millions as claimants in the bankruptcy filing \u2013 appear remote. <\/p>\n
So could a DP World Tour reunion eventually be in the pipeline when the contract with LIV ends? The circuit currently sanctions two events in Spain \u2013 the Open de Espana in Madrid and the Catalunya Championship \u2013 but the Andalucia Masters has not been on the schedule since 2024.<\/p>\n
And at a time where showcasing venerable layouts is more crucial than ever in attracting eyeballs, a stage like Valderrama cannot be ignored. There is a possibility that the battleground for continental Europe\u2019s most famous course could soon return to being a one-way fight.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have a great relationship with a lot of people on the tour, but we haven\u2019t specifically spoken about the future,\u201d Reveriego says. \u201cIf an opportunity arises in the future for an interesting event, we\u2019ll certainly study it. We can\u2019t rule it out. We had a great relationship with the tour for many years.<\/p>\n
