SLS lifted off from Launch Complex-39B at NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kennedy Space Center<\/a> (KSC) in Florida, and, to the awe of hundreds of thousands, climbed a bright blue early evening sky on a trail of smoke left by the vehicle&#8217;s solid rocket boosters up into <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More than <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-moon-launch-brought-nearly-350-000-people-to-floridas-space-coast\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-moon-launch-brought-nearly-350-000-people-to-floridas-space-coast\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-moon-launch-brought-nearly-350-000-people-to-floridas-space-coast\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">300,000 people traveled to the Space Coast<\/a> to watch the launch from dozens of locations around KSC and surrounding cities. But the best views wouldn&#8217;t be seen until well after the rocket cleared the pad, when <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> technicians recovered the slew of engineering footage captured by dozens of specialized cameras distributed everywhere from the base of the launch pad to drones positioned in the air to track every detail of the launch. (Image credit: Josh Dinner)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-a323bc62-b823-11f1-aef6-1bc146e768e5\">The newly-released videos include a wide spectrum (literally) of views and angles that follow SLS from just before engine ignition through solid rocket booster separation as the rocket leaves Earth&#8217;s atmosphere. NASA teams used scientifically calibrated in-flight imaging (SCIFLI) to compile footage ranging from the visible light spectrum, to short-wave infrared (SWIR), near-infrared (NIR), mid-wave infrared (MWIR) and infrared \u2014 to give you a few helpful acronyms for context as you <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nasa.gov\/search?q=KSC-20260401-MH&amp;page=1&amp;media=video&amp;yearStart=2026&amp;yearEnd=2026\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.nasa.gov\/search?q=KSC-20260401-MH&amp;page=1&amp;media=video&amp;yearStart=2026&amp;yearEnd=2026\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pursue these videos on NASA&#8217;s Artemis II album<\/a>. These different wavelengths of light captured views imperceivable to the eye and typical camera sensors, and allowed NASA technicians to filter out things like the extreme brightness of the flames from the rocket\u2019s engines.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-a323bc62-b823-11f1-aef6-1bc146e768e5-1\">Artemis II was the first crewed mission of NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis program<\/a>, which aims to establish a permanent base on the surface of the moon in the 2030s. It was also the first flight of NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orion spacecraft<\/a> with astronauts aboard. Essentially a shakedown cruise for Orion&#8217;s life support systems, the mission flew NASA astronauts <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-reid-wiseman-space-biography\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-reid-wiseman-space-biography\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-reid-wiseman-space-biography\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reid Wiseman<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/victor-glover.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/victor-glover.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/victor-glover.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Victor Glover<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/christina-koch\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/christina-koch\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/christina-koch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christina Koch<\/a>, as well as Canadian astronaut <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-moon-astronaut-canada-jeremy-hansen\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-moon-astronaut-canada-jeremy-hansen\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-moon-astronaut-canada-jeremy-hansen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeremy Hansen<\/a> on a 10-day flight around the moon and back to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>The next mission in NASA&#8217;s lunar line up, Artemis III, will last longer, but won&#8217;t fly as far. Artemis III is scheduled to launch in mid-2027 with NASA astronauts Randy Bresnik, Frank Rubio and Andrew Douglas, as well as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency<\/a> (ESA) astronaut Luca Parmitano of Italy. They will launch aboard Orion to Earth orbit, where their spacecraft will rendezvous with the two commercial lunar landers NASA has contracted for the Artemis program, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a>&#8216;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starship<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Origin<\/a>&#8216;s Blue Moon.<\/p>\n<p>Artemis III is expected to last about two weeks as Orion will rendezvous and dock with each lander separately to test the spacecrafts&#8217; interoperability.
