The music<\/a> scene is in mourning following the sudden death of a respected DJ who provided the soundtrack to hundreds of Saturday nights.<\/p>\n

Andrei Mazandarani, 55, tragically died in hospital in Perth<\/a> on Monday night following a brave, eight-week battle with gallbladder cancer.<\/p>\n

Andrei, who went by the stage name DJ Andrei Maz, was taken to hospital in July suffering severe abdominal pains.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe prognosis initially was, we\u2019re going to go into pretty full-on chemo, and we\u2019re going to get the tumour down to an operable size,\u201d younger brother Anton told 7NEWS.com.au.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was the initial plan but literally every day, and as the week\u2019s progressed, it was just bad news after bad news because of the complications.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just brutally quick \u2014 from standing up and being fine to bed-ridden in the hospital in excruciating pain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrei was accustomed to chronic pain, having also lived with Crohn\u2019s disease since his early 20s, and remained stoic throughout the battle that ultimately cost the beloved husband and father-of-two his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t like the fuss, didn\u2019t want everybody being sad about him,\u201d Anton said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a real family man, just trying to shield his kids from what he was going through.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was \u2014 for somebody whose career was based on entertaining hundreds of people every weekend \u2014 actually pretty private.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven waiting for a more optimum time to let people outside of the immediate family know what was happening, unfortunately it got to a point where there wasn\u2019t going to be an optimal time, so it has taken a lot of people, even people that are quite close, by surprise and shock.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lifelong musician, DJ and track curator\u2019s career took him across Australia and abroad.<\/p>\n

At 18 he bought a one-way ticket to London where he lived for 12 months, \u201cattending legendary warehouse parties, wandering the streets of London during the poll tax riots, dancing all night at illegal raves and hitchhiking across Europe to witness the fall of the Berlin Wall\u201d.<\/p>\n

He returned to Perth in 1990 and co-started a band called Yummy Fur (later known as Six Mile High) with family and best friends, selling out venues, signing with Columbia Records, and eventually making the move to Melbourne<\/a> and eventually the UK<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He moved back to WA<\/a> in 2004 where he used his \u201cencyclopedic knowledge\u201d of music to star as an in-demand DJ.<\/p>\n

Andrei and Anton famously ran \u201cDeath Disco\u201d at Amplifier Bar \/ Capitol for more than a decade, hosting 620 consecutive parties across Saturday nights between 2007 and 2019, and enjoying the company of \u201csome of our all-time musical heroes\u201d.<\/p>\n

After that he held down multiple residencies across the city, and Anton said proudly \u201cthere wasn\u2019t a dance floor he couldn\u2019t fill\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s a big part of the outpouring and the diversity of the people that have been saying nice things \u2014 he didn\u2019t confine himself to just cool club stuff or the pubs and the bars,\u201d Anton said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe could look around the room, he could see the demographic of the room … and he would just know what to play.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019d mix it up … and just keep everybody happy like an intergenerational, DJ wizard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tributes have flooded social media, with many in shock over the sudden news.<\/p>\n

\u201cAndrei took me under his wing at the age of 21, taught me how to DJ and showed me the world of music,\u201d Alex Taylor-Vivian said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people have heroes or idols. He was my hero and my idol.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was the best teacher and mentor anybody could ask for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another said they had spent \u201cway too many hours\u201d in clubs and bars partying to a \u201cMaz, or double Maz, soundtrack\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cA solid egg, and staunch … Condolences to the whole clan and no doubt very extended family,\u201d Heath Bradby said.<\/p>\n

\u2018A record for his kids\u2019<\/p>\n

Loved ones have launched a GoFundMe<\/a> to help with funeral costs and assist his immediate family as they grieve.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe circumstances are tragic and everybody\u2019s still hurting a lot but that kind of generosity and people reaching out, even though we haven\u2019t personally met a lot of these people, it really does help deal with the grief,\u201d Anton said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAndrei\u2019s led a really good life. It\u2019s a short life, but it\u2019s been packed with all these human connections and fun times and bringing joy and fun to people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n

\u201c(The tributes are) a record for his kids to go and see the kind of man that he was. That\u2019s nice.\u201d<\/p>\n
