At the entrance to Toronto\u2019s Biidaasige Park, a bright red trunk splits into a canopy of basketball<\/a> hoops. More than twenty rims sit at the ends of curving steel branches, some low enough for an easy shot and others hovering overhead. Alexandre Arrechea\u2019s Orange Functional translates a piece of familiar court equipment to suggest an oversized fruit tree, and anyone<\/a> arriving with a basketball can play it. The sculpture<\/a> currently stands in the plaza of Old Firehall 30 as part of the Lassonde Art Trail.<\/p>\n

The basic idea predates its Toronto setting by well over a decade. Arrechea developed Orange Tree in 2010 as a branching structure whose ends terminate in basketball rims, with balls gathered below like fallen fruit. The artist\u2019s archive dates the work to 2010, while contemporary documentation describes versions reaching roughly twenty feet high. Those earlier sculptures established the strange image at the center of the project: a basketball hoop multiplied until the game itself becomes difficult to recognize.<\/p>\n

A major change for Alexandre Arrechea\u2019s Orange Functional came in 2022. Produced as a commission for Art Omi in Ghent, New York, the steel sculpture was designed so people could actually shoot into its branching hoops. Art Omi describes it as the artist<\/a>\u2018s first functional basketball sculpture, built from steel with basketball nets and a painted finish. The formal joke suddenly became playable.<\/p>\n

Once a ball leaves someone\u2019s hands, the familiar geometry of basketball starts to break apart. A player can aim for a high rim and watch the missed shot drop through one below it. The branches create several possible trajectories at once, so a clean miss can unexpectedly become a basket.<\/p>\n

The concept of instability has followed Arrechea\u2019s basketball works for years. The court is one of the artist\u2019s recurring subjects, used as a recognizable system with boundaries and agreed ways of moving through space. Here, the standard hoop is still legible, yet multiplication scrambles its purpose. There is no single basket to defend or obvious direction of play. The object remains familiar enough that people instinctively know what to do with a ball, then asks them to invent what happens next.<\/p>\n

The tree analogy becomes clearest once the shooting starts. Balls rise into the branches and drop back toward the pavement like oversized orange fruit, a movement built into Arrechea\u2019s description of the work from its 2022 functional version onward. Toronto gives that image a particularly literal setting: the sculpture sits among the new plantings of Biidaasige Park, its red steel canopy standing above younger trees nearby.<\/p>\n
