Samsung DeX has existed ever since the company released the Galaxy S8 lineup in 2017, and it’s always meant plugging into a monitor to get a real desktop out of your phone.<\/p>\n

A third-party app called Gadesk claims to skip that, running full DeX on the Z Fold 8’s 7.6-inch screen, no monitor or external display required. It also doesn’t require rooting or sideloading, since the app is available on the Play Store.<\/p>\n

I wanted this setup for actual work, not just a party trick to show off.<\/p>\n

I typically have to wait in the car when I pick up my kids from school. I want to get more work done, and Samsung phones running actual DeX have handled demanding work sessions surprisingly well in the past.<\/p>\n

This is why I expected this to go smoother<\/a> than it did.<\/p>\n

Android’s native Desktop Mode borrows heavily from Samsung DeX<\/p>\n

Just getting it paired was the first fight<\/p>\n

USB debugging, accessibility permissions, and a lot of failed attempts<\/p>\n

Setting up DeX on the Fold 8 means turning off Auto Blocker, enabling Developer options, and turning on wireless debugging before the app can attempt a connection.<\/p>\n

I survived that, but next comes the pairing code fiasco between the app and your device’s wireless debugging menu. When that was done, I had to grant accessibility permissions to display anything on the screen.<\/p>\n

None of that went smoothly the first time, the second, or even the third attempt. I had to try the process multiple times before the desktop interface appeared on my Fold’s inner screen.<\/p>\n

I had no idea what I was doing wrong, even after following the on-screen instructions.<\/p>\n

It worked exactly once<\/p>\n

After that, the pairing broke and stayed broken<\/p>\n

The first successful connection felt like a genuine win, until I tried using it the next time I needed it for something.<\/p>\n

Pairing issues came back, and I couldn’t get the app to reliably work after the initial session, no matter how many times I repeated the same steps.<\/p>\n

I wanted the transition to be seamless, almost native, but if it causes this much hassle, I’m fine with the native layout.<\/p>\n

Samsung’s DeX experience is typically praised for its seamless behavior<\/a> when you’re using a real display.<\/p>\n

Making it work with a third-party workaround doesn’t inherit the same reliability, and the gap between the two experiences became obvious quickly.<\/p>\n

Above all, the free version packs a hefty amount of ads<\/p>\n

I wasn’t about to pay for something with a subpar user experience<\/p>\n

Gadesk’s free tier caps each session at 15 minutes and fills the rest with ads, with a $20 one-time fee to remove both restrictions.<\/p>\n

Given how inconsistently the app worked, paying to remove a time limit didn’t make sense.<\/p>\n

I stuck with the free version through every attempt in the past two days. The ads were a major annoyance, second only to pairing problems.<\/p>\n

Above all, the trackpad never showed up<\/p>\n

Not every frustration was about pairing<\/p>\n

I turned on the virtual trackpad and keyboard options for convenience, expecting at least basic mouse pointer input after everything was connected for a brief session.<\/p>\n

The trackpad never appeared on the screen, even though I enabled it in the app’s settings menu every time.<\/p>\n

Google’s Desktop Mode push has made the phone-to-desktop deal a bigger talking point<\/a> among the Android community, and it made the third-party gap even more obvious.<\/p>\n

Other attempts produced an overlay on screen that was not only transparent but completely unresponsive, with every button refusing to register touch input.<\/p>\n

I wanted a work setup<\/p>\n

The idea of a desktop mode baked into your daily driver is quite appealing, which is why I wanted this to work for daily tasks rather than a brief demo.<\/p>\n

I got one successful session, a Pixel attempt that was worse in some ways, and a trackpad that never once appeared, no matter how many times I toggled it on or off.<\/p>\n

I’ve learned that workarounds that lean heavily on accessibility permissions and wireless debugging are fragile. They’re built on systems that were never designed for this purpose.<\/p>\n

Every layer has to play nice, be it pairing, permissions, or the display overlay.<\/p>\n

I would be more comfortable using the feature if it came from Samsung or Google, with native DeX or Desktop Mode<\/a> support.<\/p>\n

Right now, using this for real work would mean spending an entire day getting the app to connect or pair to the device’s display.
