US President Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping within a week.<\/p>\n
He said on Saturday nthat Tehran \u201cwant to make a deal where they open the Strait immediately because they\u2019re losing so badly\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m rejecting their deal,\u201d Mr Trump told reporters at the White House, adding that the US already had \u201ctotal control\u201d of the strait, with \u201cmassive amounts of oil\u201d passing through it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey want to make a deal, and I think that\u2019s fine. I like making a deal, too. But that deal would not be acceptable,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told reporters at the UN in New York on Friday that agreement could be reached \u201cif the necessary conditions are met\u201d and that these were contained in a memorandum of understanding signed by the two countries in June.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Russia\u2019s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told world leaders at the UN General Assembly that Moscow will achieve its military aims in Ukraine \u201cno matter\u201d the circumstances. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe aims of the special military operation will be achieved, the threat to Russian security will be eliminated and peaceful life will come back. This will happen no matter the circumstances,\u201d he said at the UN on Saturday, using Moscow\u2019s shorthand phrase for the conflict.<\/p>\n
He went on to accused European countries of \u201cdoing everything\u201d to thwart talks to help end the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv. <\/p>\n
\u201cEurope is doing everything it can to thwart peace talks in which the (Donald) Trump administration is interested,\u201d he said, referring to the US government.<\/p>\n
However, he claimed Moscow is ready to help stabilise the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and the wider Gulf region, as the US-Iran conflict drags on. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe need trust in the relationships between The Gulf states, the Arab states, and Iran. We need stable regional architecture,\u201d Mr Lavrov said.<\/p>\n
\u201cRussia, together with other responsible states, stands ready to constructively contribute to stabilising this strategically important region.\u201d<\/p>\n
